So I bought a second house. Previous owner had about seven dogs. I've pulled up all the carpet. I don't think Kilz is up to this. Anyone got anything more? It's not so strong that it smacks you in the face, but after a few minutes one notices it. I'm thinking Servpro, myself.

Have a professional clean it and get a warranty if offered. ServPro would be a good one.

Funny you should mention them! That's who I'm having clean the slab. They're the ones who actually mentioned sealing it after it's cleaned. I see I left out that little nugget of info. Thanks!

I bet two coats of oil based KILZ will take care of it.

Will another paint/sealer work while accepting thinset? probably not, thinset needs the pores in the concrete to adhere good, I have never put it on a slick surface like paint. you could try a small test, piece of plywood about 2' square and paint it then try some tile on top. let it sit 4-5 days to cure good then see if it will pop lose.

Maybe seal the slab then add a 3/8" concrete/green board sub floor? Nah, afraid that would flex too much and crack tiles constantly. Ugh... Maybe Servpro can do enough that I won't need to seal it. fingers crossed.

After Servpro cleans and seals do concrete stain. Usually the quality of the concrete isn't good enough to stain. Are there very many cracks that are visible and is the concrete a consistent color? All those things will show once you stain it. I used a muratic acid based stain on our slab when we built the house. Still looks good 18 years later. There is a liquid floor wax you can add to give it a high luster shine.
