I've bought outboard parts from Boats.Net, and have never had anything but good service and pricing. I'm considering ordering a small outboard from them. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with them? OnlineOutboards.com have tons of bad reviews and complaints, but Boats.Net seems to be a legit supplier. Thanks, IslandJim

I'm interested in a Tohatsu 9.8, 20" shaft. Only 84 pounds. Most of the other 9.8 or 9.9's weigh near 100 pounds. My current Merc 2-stroke 9.8 weighs 65 pounds! I bought a Yammy 15 4-stroke years ago, and it was only about 95 pounds, but the new ones are around 120. And I thought Oprah put on weight. IslandJim

IslandJim The Tohatsu and the Mercury 9.9's are the same outboard. You might catch the Mercury on sale at Bass Pro Shops starting March 12th? They will be on sale but it doesn't show how much yet.

Dozer: Thanks for the BassPro tip. The Merc 9.9 and the Tohatsu 9.8 are identical, except for the decals and maybe warranty, but the Merc is $275.00 more. Paying for the name. Tohatsu also makes all the Evinrudes under 15 HP. Tohatsu's 9.9 has 50% larger displacement and EFI, but weighs almost 100 pounds. I really don't want a heavy motor on my 14-foot flats skiff. My '82 Merc is perfect, but it's left me stranded a couple of times and runs hot, even after a new impeller and cleaning all the salt out of the water passages. It's old, like me. My skiff is 58 years old, but well-preserved. Thanks, IslandJim

I loved it and how it ran until it had problems and there was nowhere within 3 hours of me to work on it. Since the little Merc's are made by Tohatsu you can find someone to work on them easily. The Tohatsu's are big in South Louisiana still but around here you just never hear about them. My dad had a 1970 Mercury 9.8 on a Duracraft 14' flat bottom and we used it until 2001 when it finally gave us nire trouble than it was worth. Dad bought a 15 hp Johnson and it has been good since then but it is harder to work on than the Merc was.

For anyone following this thread, I sent an e-mail inquiry to Tohatsu, and asked them if Boats.Net was an authorized Tohatsu dealer. They responded that they ARE an authorized dealer. I feel a bit better about possibly dealing with them. As I said before, I have ordered lots of parts from them in the past, and they were always fast and reliable. I still need to ask about how they deal with warranty, etc. There's a Tohatsu dealer about 5 miles away, but I doubt they would be friendly, if I didn't buy from them. On the upside, reviews of the 9.8 motors are all 100% positive. Rare.

IslandJim Awesome! Tohatsu is one of the oldest Marine Manufacturers in the world. I didn't know about them being an authorized dealer. Do you have to pay freight and/or tax on it from Boats.net? Have you asked the local people how much one would be?

Free shipping. No tax, but to get a Texas title, I'll have to pay TPWD 6.25%. I'm gonna play Lets Make A Deal with the two local dealers. IslandJim

IslandJim Well I was looking for a 40 HP I looked everywhere around me and the cheapest one was $7200.00 plus TT&L. My wife and I decided to just buy another (bigger & better) boat and be done with it.

Dozer: Yeah, it's sad that you can buy a used boat, motor and trailer cheaper than you can buy a new replacement engine. A friend ran into that same delimma. I went to the local Tohatsu dealer today, and they're very close to the online prices. If they order three outboards, they get free shipping. If they have a couple more orders in Springtime, it'll be a wash, and I like to "buy local" if I can. The bigger engines have to be delivered thru and installed by a dealer, so online purchases don't pay off. Thanks, IslandJim
