This is a difficult question to answer. The first criteria is how much do you want to invest? Entry level is hundreds of dollars for some, and thousands of dollars for others. The next issue is the type of camera. I would only consider a camera where you can change the lens. The next decision is whether you want to go with the mirrorless technology. The mirrorless cameras are more expensive, but they are the future. So, if you are looking for a non-mirrorless camera, the Canon Rebel T7i is a good one to look at. If you are looking for the mirrorless, the Canon R series, or the Fuji XT100 is a good choice. If money is an issue, then you can drop down to an older model and still get a good camera. I have picked up some really good deals on Ebay over the years. Good luck.

Thanks. Helpful.

I agree with all that Osbornfishing said above. I would add that another expense is the lenses if you go with any DSLR camera. Canon and Nikon have been market leaders (I shoot Nikon) , but Canon has really innovated and taken over a big segment of the "consumer and prosumer" market. They both make excellent products, but consider that the glass (lenses) are camera brand specific.
Tell your wife that Ansel Adams once said, "the most important part of the camera is the 12 inches behind it " wink
Don't get me started on photo editing software - Photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar, On 1, Nik, etc. - its a dizzying array of products - almost as bad as fishing equipment!

I don't think you need to invest a lot with todays digital phones taking great photos. I would, however invest in photo enhancing software like Lightroom. Here are 3 photos I took with my I-phone last year & last week... [Linked Image]

Rshifflett...I have 2 Cannon cameras...One is a EOS Cannon Rebel T3I & A smaller Powershots SX530 HS. They both take great pictures, but I can still take just as good a photos with my I-Phone. Either way I still resort to always making the picture BETTER with "Lightroom" &" Photo Sketcher" software...

An iPhone can definitely do the deal in may scenarios. My sister is an exceptional iPhone photographer. She took this landscape in Colorado
this past summer with her iPhone X using the "pano" feature which allows you to move the camera across your subject all the while your camera
is taking many exposures. Then the computer in the iPhone stitches them together to form a seamless image. She then made
some tonal adjustments in an image editor as Herr Vogey mentioned above.

Get a camera with at least 20mb pixels. iPhones are great but not if you are enlarging pictures. We also went to a photography class put on by a retired photographer. It was a great intro into the digital age and all the features of today’s camera.
