After reading the "Threatened at gun point" thread and after having a jet ski do circles around me on Lake Houston, it got me thinking that maybe I should get a camera like a Go Pro to put on my boat to record such incidents. However, since a Youtuber is about the last thing I will ever be, I do not see the need to spend the amount of money that the Go Pro's cost. What are the more affordable camera options out there to have on a boat to record things for evidence? Also, do they have remotes to turn them on and off?

Go pro is the best route and has the most supported accessories. You don't need anything fancy. You can get an older generation camera used for around $100 and it will do exactly what you need it to. I keep one on my boat at all times for the exact same reason. It's actualy come in pretty handy with guys pulling up on you. Just tell them the camera is recording during a tournament and watch them slink off. Or in the case of the College kids DQ, I don't see how that couldn't have solidified their case a little.

Wish has cheap cameras

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!

Do you live around lake Houston? I live in Indian Shores. I am also looking at putting a camera on my boat that records in a Loop. Where did this Jet Ski circling take place?

Following.....can someone explain how the loop works?

I want a camera that continues to record, I guess thats the loop, and then after catching a fish can save the current recording and start a new one. Not wanting to have to review long footages to get 15 secs of film...thanks.

On my GoPro's (any version beyond hero3), you can set the camera to run all the time. It only keeps the latest loop interval that you can set. For example, if you have set 20 minute loop:

-it will run forever as long as there is enough battery power, you can just keep it plugged into your boat battery all day and it will not drain it.
-it only keeps the last 20 minutes; but you have to capture it by hitting the "capture/record" button.
-if something happens and you want to capture it, you have to do it right then. The camera will have the last 20 minutes of video up till that time.
-if you forget to hit capture/record, you've lost it forever.

It is intended to not fill your SD card. Intervals are in 5, 20, 60, 120 minutes. There's also a MAX, but not useful. For what you're trying to do, 20 is plenty. Hope that helps. Tim

So...If I set the "loop" for 20 minutes. It will record for 20 minutes and then start recording over what I just recorded? If and when I hit "capture/record" it will save from the moment I press it and the prior 20 minutes?
