Which is really more dangerous on boats?
This question for the forum bro-bros and especially for any bass boat salesmen on the forum that claim that their bass boat oxygen systems are no more dangerous on boats that aerators and electric livewell pumps. Most fishing oxygen systems will deliver 100% pure oxygen, PSA O2 generators deliver less than 100% pure oxygen, all very capable of generating oxygen-rich enrichment.
My 1 question is: What do you believe is most dangerous on a boat, a high pressure SCUBA air tank or a high pressure oxygen tank? Both SCUBA tanks and fishing oxygen tanks contain 2200 psi gas pressure. The O2 gas pressure inside the oxygen tube from the O2 regulator to the stone in the livewell contains only 50 psi pressure. 50 psi is only 3 atmospheres gas pressure.

I've literally been on hundreds of dives on a boat with full (and over full) scuba tanks and we have never had a problem. Most scuba tanks are rated for 3,000 pounds pressure these days.
We also carry pure oxygen for decompression and in case of emergencies. We are always more concerned about oxygen tanks. It is really more about the regulators that you use for oxygen. An oil based lubricant is actually flammable when using 100% oxygen. It is really not an issue in most cases.

Thanks for your opinion Allan. You have a lot of dive time, are you a Dive Master? I think I am hearing you say that the high pressure air tanks and high pressure O2 tanks neither carry much safety risk on boats, concern or any special treatment on a boat. The only difference between the 2 tanks is I guess the size and color they are painted. The issue with the pure oxygen gas and oxygen regulator is possible contamination with oil resulting in oxygen-enriched fires. Am I seeing this as you explained? Question: In case you do have pure oxygen on board and are careless enough to cause an oxygen/oil fire on the regulator; how would you extinguish that fire with the boats ABC fire extinguisher? Will the standard ABC boat fire extinguisher kill any fire that is oxygen-enriched with pure 100% oxygen gas? I do understand that an ambient air fire can be quickly killed with any ABC extinguisher commonly carried on boats.

We run pure oxygen in summer tournaments. Very simple and easy system. Never had an issue

I'm a P.A.D.I Master Diver (Dive Master+).

Not just the color but how they are filled (pure O2 or highly compressed air).
The issue with the pure oxygen gas and oxygen regulator is possible contamination with oil resulting in oxygen-enriched fires. Am I seeing this as you explained?
Correct!
Question: In case you do have pure oxygen on board and are careless enough to cause an oxygen/oil fire on the regulator; how would you extinguish that fire with the boats ABC fire extinguisher? We always kept an ABC Extinguisher near the O2 tank.

Looks to me like the danger/safety/risk management is basically the same with any/all high pressure gas tanks (cylinders), SCUBA air tanks, SCUBA mixed gas tanks, oxygen tanks, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen and argon tanks and so on. The type of high pressure gas inside the tanks doesn’t make any difference. The high pressure gas inside the tank and tank rupture is the explosion danger and that is what many people are extremely afraid of. All high pressure gas tanks can explode if the valve is broken off, the pressure relief mechanism fail, when they get to hot, when a Great White shark bites them, a simple careless mistake securing or storing the tank is dangerous locations. They say safely securing high pressure tanks is a big deal for some people. That is not really required nor necessary with dive tanks, right?

After 32 years in the fire service I am done strapping a SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) on my back with 4500psi(industry standard now) and going into burning buildings. Honestly I’d be more worried about the 60 gallons of very volatile gasoline I’m sitting on top of in my boat.......if I was inclined to worry about anything.

... if I was inclined to worry about anything. 361v - I like your attitude and healthy outlook on the rest of your life. I doubt that you worry much about anything anymore. At your age, you know that worrying about stuff that is happening or could happen or probably will happen is so stressful and actually meaningless in the big picture. You have strapped a high pressure bomb filled with oxygen on your back all those years fearlessly entering burning buildings with fire and death only 1 heartbeat away and you made it through all that relative unscathed. You have seen and experienced enough as a professional fire fighter in your lifetime to know exactly how the life story ends for everyone. You have seen, smelled and picked up the remains of the ending. That accept of how the story ends makes the little bit of time left so much easier than resisting/avoiding what’s coming. High risk professions like fire fighters, law enforcement, combat soldiers, airmen, astronauts, doctors and medical personnel that deal with highly contagious outbreaks and developing biological and chemical warfare are all highly trained people that chose extraordinary dangerous professions and I sincerely thank you for your years of service. My cousin was a professional fire fighter. He died violently in a fire trying to rescue a couple kids trapped in a closet in that fire. He was 34 YO, an expert and he loved fighting fires.

oil on oxygen regulator = fire, fire is in what part of boat (fuel tank area most likely).
I have used this for about 15 yrs now, never lost a fish even in 100+ heat, I also use please release me in the lw.

I used the similar T & H Marine product for years with no fish loss thought to be water quality related. Along with it, I ran the pump full time if I had 4 or 5 in the box. I also used 2 liter soda bottles filled with water and frozen, swapping them out as they thawed. I kept the lids on those so it didn't dilute the livewell additive during the day. I now understand that the most important thing I did was keep the water cooled to near 70 degrees. I like the ring type air stone for the flat profile and the amount of bubbling: Inexpensive ring style air diffuser

Hey bro, this sounds more like a big explosion not just a little fire on board, like blow you right out of the boat and burn whatever is left of that boat to the water line. You do ware a life jacket, right? Just kidding, don’t see many boaters on the water routinely wearing a life jacket these days. Keep jackets in the boat in case the State water cops pull you over for a routine fishing license and boat safety check to avoid the ticket is about it.
