Hey guys, as the whites start to run, we have a Webelos den of boys we want to teach to catch and cook what they catch. To do that, they need a place to camp. I know Reimers does not allow camping but was curious if anyone knew of a good spot for whites that also allows camping, so these young boys can try their hand?

Thanks!

Russ

Hrm, need to check that out, thanks

Seems interesting. I have fished Buch a lot, never fished the rivers there. Curious how the fishing is, since the point is to catch and cook heh.

Colorado Bend is all about timing: timing a decent water flow with the sand bass run(spawn) up the Colorado River from lake Buchanan. Generally Feb-March(NOW). Go on the “Whites, Hybrids, Stripers” section of the TFF for up to date “real time” info. Would be a perfect setting for Scouts though. Very bank fishing friendly and make a reservation for camping in one of the group camping areas. https://texasfishingforum.com/forum...ew/1/colorado-bend-white-bass-run#UNREAD

Its been years since I was involved with scouting, my son is now 37 and was an Eagle scout/OA /God and Country Award. I was the Fishing merit badge instructor - among other badges. A lot of kids didn't want to to the Fishing merit badge because they thought they had to eat a fish. They were so relieved when I pointed out the the book said, "catch a fish and cook it " - no mention of eating it -although most did!
Great times, miss it
food

Take along some Kraft mac and cheese for those who won't eat the fish!

Just one more cast!

Not Whites, but Beavers Bend state park. South eastern OK. About 3 hours from the metroplex. Rainbow trout, great camping with showers and restrooms. Beautiful place.

Lots of scouts go to Colorado Bend State Park. I know because I sell the firewood at the park entrance and they buy a lot of it.

But as mentioned whites are about timing. May be better to have a couple small boats and try to catch a couple catfish. That's almost always doable.

And it is the perfect camping place for a large group.

PB flathead 34.5 lbs - I know it's small but it was still the record for Lake Travis when I caught it!
PB Blue 58.5 lbs jugline 43.5 lbs on R&R which was the other Lake Travis record when caught.

Thanks guys. We are looking into whether the den wants to drive 2 hours... me.. yea.. lol.. them, not so much, so, may have to take them to a place locally, for the day, then bring them back and clean them and cook, vs camping.

That being said, may need to get my son out this weekend and let him "practice"... lol

No sand bass run, but Purtis Creek is always a good camping option for scout groups, with fishing.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Is that formerly known as Camp Cherokee?

If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

Another vote for Colorado Bend. Our troop used to go every spring break. Bring plenty of Little Georges and the boys will have a blast.
