Hey fellas I have a 97 Mariner 150. I mix the oil. From time to time I will take the plugs out and clean them up. (Makes me feel better) Anyhow, I have one plug that always looks new while the other five have carbon deposits(?) on the electrode. Does this mean it's not firing? If so, is there any way to test the plug wire.(Preferably without getting shocked) I know it's not that plug because I have switched them around for that reason.
Thanks

take the plug out and reinstall it in the boot take a jumper cable and attach one end to a good ground and the other end clamp it on the threaded end on the plug crank it over and see if the spark is jumping the gap. no fire time to troubleshoot

If you haven't lost power then it is working. It could be that that cyl. may be firing hotter than the rest. I would put it in a different cyl. than the one it came out of and run it a while. Recheck and see if it comes out different.

Since you have ruled out the plug by switching them it could be a bad coil, I had to replace one on my old Black Max that wasn't firing and another that was firing intermittently...also check your plug wires.

+1, if you want to test the fire from the coil take the wire off the plug and put a screwdriver in the cap making metal to metal contact and holding the plastic handle move the metal shaft of screwdriver towards the block while someone cranks the motor. A strong spark will jump a pretty good gap. One concern is if that plug is that clean it may not be getting fuel. If a 2 cycle is not getting fuel to a cylinder then that cylinder is also not getting something else. You might take a pic of that plug and post it. Not after you cleaned it though.
