My question is "What type of reel are you going to use? Right hand or left?" I think about this often. I use right handed baitcast reels and I cast with my right hand and switch over to reel with my right hand. I think about learning to cast with my left hand to be more efficient. Or switching to left handed reels, which is how I reel spinning reels anyway. Maybe one day I’ll make a decision to switch. But it’s a good question if you’re injured like the OP. Maybe make a total switch to casting left and reeling left, since you’re hurt. Bought a left handed reel off a guy, he was needing money. It was a really nice reel so I intended on using it for flipping. I hung into a fish and almost broke my wrist trying to figure out which way to turn the handle with my left hand. The reel is in my toolbox. I have a nice left hand retrieve Shimano I bought used for a good deal with the same intention. Haven’t tried it yet and I bough it five years ago.

I am left handed. I throw with my left and reel with my right with a "right handed" reel. I dont have to switch. I never did understand why they make baitcasters that way, easier for left handers. One of the few advantages of being left handed. I taught a right hander how to use baitcasters years ago. Since he was just starting, I had him buy all left handed reels. Now he is a great caster and doesn't have to switch. A right hander, using "left handed" baitcasters. Not complaining, just an observation.

I get made fun of by my regular fishing friends for using a left handed BC. It is how I started. Used a spinning rod exclusively until I purchased my first boat and started pitching docks. The bite doesn't happen before you can switch hands, but reeling left handed on the spinning reel tells me I am doing it correctly

Right elbow is shot from years of rodeoing. Had to change over to left handed reels about 10-12 years ago. Best thing I have ever done.

I always wanted a left handed reel. Well I got one but it's awkward. I use it for flipping and worms/jigs. Can't reel fast enough for traps and crankbaits. My dad could cast with either arm. I've tried to cast with left arm but just can't.

I grew up as a righty using right hand reels. Three years ago I destroyed my left shoulder. I switched to left hand retrieve reels because I couldn't set the hook or do anything else with my left arm except reel. It was frustrating to re-learn everything, but it turned out to be great.
I can still use a right hand setup, but I'm more accurate, have harder hooksets, and have better reel control when fishing lefty.

I'm a leftie living in a right-handed world. To complicate matters even more, my right eye is dominant. In living in the world built for right-handers, I learned to do a lot of things with either hand. The ONE bonus I seem to have is casting left-handed but keeping the rod there after the cast, reeling with my right hand. This is particularly efficient when pitchin or flippin. I can, however, cast with the right as well, though not as good. I hope that spreading my sporting use of arms helps me not wear one out prematurely.

When I was younger, I started casting left handed just to be able to start a bait like a buzz bait coming back to me as soon as it hit the water. I practiced a lot in the yard in the open so I didn't have to hit a target, just get the muscle memory happening to cast left handed. It also helped to learn fishing flats with a Trap.. no point of aim, just cast and reel it in. Over time, I was able to get more accurate with left handed casting, but I got away from fishing and now only try it in open water. I watch the pro's and they all seem to cast with two hands from either side. Probably the best way to do it.

Try doing what I call a "pivot" cast. Have one hand on the reel and the other onthe butt end of the rod. Use the one on the butt end for the movement and the hand on the reel to pivot. Your shoulder and arm doesn't have to move with that type of cast.
