I have researched and decided based on my budget needs and use to get a Vibe SG 13. This will allow me to spend more $ on a paddle cart etc... I have looked at what "my" length is on charts and it is a 230. Should I be concerned with the two tier seat height? I have read where going up to the next longer length is not an issue. Will the higher seat position if and when used require a longer paddle ? Is a longer paddle worse than having one too short ? I am looking at Bending Branches, Aquabound and Werner and have a budget around 200$ any thought or comments are appreciated

I have a pair of AquaBound Manta Ray Posi-Lok paddles and really like them. It has a broad blade for high angle paddling, weighs 29.5 ounces, and is right at $200, which was my price point. The AquaBound Sting Ray has a narrower blade for lower angle paddling.
Honestly, the difference between a 230 and 240 cm paddles is only 4 inches, so I would not stress over that amount of length. It might matter if you’re an Olympic class paddler, but probably not for casual use. If you were to err, I’d err on the longer side.

Thanks for the info..I don't know what the difference is between a high and low angle paddler I am guessing that is just a "style" of paddling or is one more efficient than the other ?

I am guessing the type of kayak might be a factor..Sit on to top on or sit inside ? Mine is a SOT

High angle paddler is a bit more efficient and powerful, low angle is more relaxed.

High angle is the most efficent paddle stroke.

I prefer the feel of a high angle stroke. This'd be where the blade passes a bit closer and not out wide.
So, I am thinking that with an adjustable seat height, I'd want to err on the side of a bit of extra length. but, not by much . . . just round up and not down so to speak.
If the paddle is a bit long for a high angle stroke seated low, it is almost of no consequence as the blade will just be a tiny bit more like a low angle.
One other thing. I have a high quality Warner paddle and another of average quality. You just can't imagine the difference between the two in terms of lightness and touch. If you are going to paddle, spend the extra dollars to go somewhat high end.

I have a Bending Branches Slice Hybrid Plus adjustable paddle, it was my first one since I was not sure what length to get. It's a decent paddle but after paddling with it at 225 cm and 240 cm, I really did not see an appreciable difference.
Get a pair of YakGrips, they are the best thing since sliced bread.

My thoughts on an adjustable paddle are it will never be as good as a paddle that is a fixed length. Determine what position you will be in most of the time, high or low seat position and get the paddle that best fits that application.

I'm no paddle expert but I do have a paddle kayak and fish out of it about half the time. In my opinion yes a paddle that is too long can be just as big of an issue as a paddle that's too short. If you're 6' tall or better 230 is probably good for that kayak. If you're 5' 9" or shorter a 220 is probably a better choice. Also changing your seat position does affect your paddle stroke but not enough to where you need an adjustable paddle. Paddling in the raised seat position is going to require more back effort and will have more strain on your back than paddling in the low seat position. Keep in mind the wider the paddle blade the faster your acceleration will be but it will require more effort in each paddle stroke to maintain speed. A smaller paddle blade doesn't get you up to speed as fast but requires less effort to maintain speed than a wide paddle blade. The above video is good for paddling angles. Here is a good instructional video on paddling. https://youtu.be/rUYEH2cOA7c
You get out of it what you put into it!

I had a Diablo Amigo and a Bonafide kayak. As high as I would sit up, I needed a longer paddle so I could really dig in while paddling sitting that high. I am 6' and I ended up with a 260 cm carbon fiber paddle and loved it.

I forgot my paddle one day and ended up using my stake out pole as a paddle. Paddled a couple of miles with it. It starts really slow but was surprise at how well it worked once speed picked up.

gander: As a rank amateur kayaker that basically taught himself to paddle, let me tell you a story. I was paddling back to my launch after about 5 miles, and was tired and just flailing the water with my paddle. Fil Spencer, an experienced kayak fishing guide, paddled by me and said, "Take long, slow strokes". I started doing that, using my body, twisting it, and soon, I caught up to Fil! His passing-by instruction taught me more than five years of paddling had. Stick your paddle forward into the water, use your body to power your kayak forward, not just your arms! It'll make your kayaking much more enjoyable. My $.02. IslandJim

He was part of the group of 8 or 10 kayak anglers that made the drive from the Houston/Galveston/Rockport area to take part in the first national saltwater kayak tournament trail (humminbird extreme edge series). What a great group of Texans to make it over. There were five tournaments, three in Florida, two in Texas. I was brand new at kayaking and rented a kayak to compete on the tour.
