Jugline
A fishing line with five or less hooks tied to a free-floating device.

For use in fresh water only.
May be used to take nongame fish, channel catfish, blue catfish and flathead catfish only.
Tagging and Marking Requirements
Must be used with a valid gear tag (see Definitions) attached within 6 inches of the free-floating device; gear tag is valid for 10 days after the date set out and must include the number of the permit to sell nongame fish taken from fresh water, if applicable. Properly marked buoys or floats qualify as valid gear tags.
For non-commercial purposes, a jugline must be marked with a free-floating device of any color other than orange.
For commercial purposes, a jugline must be marked with an orange, free-floating device.

Gear tag
A tag constructed of material as durable as the device to which it is attached. The gear tag must be legible, contain the name and address of the person using the device and the date the device was set out. Date is not required for saltwater trotlines or crab traps fished under a commercial license. For juglines and freshwater trotlines, properly marked buoys or floats qualify as valid gear tags.

Sorry, that is the old regulation. New rules went into effect February 1, 2020. Some significant changes.

Next we will have a blinking light on every Jug,Jugline,Trotline, so others can help with running them . I don't like to see a line left in the water to snag fish and birds and even wildlife. When these are outlawed only outlaws will have them.

I think the changes made are good ones.
You can now mark your jug lines with your name and customer number from your license instead of your address which I never did like doing.
Way too many crazy people out there for giving out that kind of personal information.
Also leaving the line in the water for only 6 days, and then re-dating it isn't a big deal. No jug line should be left unattended for over 6 days anyway.

Just one more cast!

6 days for a jug line is way too long. I haven’t run jugs since I was a kid but Dad used to tell us to keep an eye on our jugs unless you want to lose them. I’ve seen jugs traveling at a high rate of speed half a mile from the other jugs. Have also seen big fish that have tangle the jug in trees and been hung up there for a looong time just waiting to die. If guys would keep a closer eye on their equipment while their fishing it wouldn’t cause a problem for the other juggers. I see the majority of jug lines on my lake are unattended so I predict more regulations in the future and eventual ban of unattended equipment.

6 days for a trotline is way too long as too. We used to run trotlines back in the 80s and if we left them for more than a day the turtles would eat all the fish.

There is a fine line between fishing and floating around like an idiot!!

I see a lot of lost jugs, unmarked, just randomly floating with an unbaited hook. Found one once with a half rotted fish on it. Since they are not marked I treat them like any big piece of trash I find floating in the lake.

Be aware that the typical smaller pool noodles fall short of the 3 inch wide rule, no matter how long you make them. I was told by TPWD that it should be ok that they just wanted to make sure that the floats are easily visible. But technically many of them are not legal.

This is very confusing and I would argue it with a judge if I got a ticket as the book and the online information still shows the old rules. Wish they would update their website to the new rules.

I made myself 10 jugs and was going to try them but I just catch so many with my rod I cannot justify catching more fish. I wrote everything on my bottle and attached a piece of tape with the date so I could change that out. I have never used them but suspect I might someday when my kids come to Texas to visit me and we need a bunch to fry.

The new rules were to go in effect sometime this February. I forget the date right off. Instead of waiting for the next yearly booklet or season starting August 31st/September 1st, 2020 thru 2021. There was a compromise on dates. I know when they asked for feedback, I shared mine. I explained several factors involved, as to why the original proposal was not feasible. I explained that we could somehow meet in the middle, as I understood some of the issues from looking at both sides.

Yes, correct, as to leaving address, as to a lot of nutcases out there who decide to interpret the law or enforce when not certified to do so, such as a Game Warden. I recall once back in the early 80s, they were saying to put your DL number on your mechanic tools, so as to identify them easily if stolen. I did it, not realizing what could happen down the road in time. Now they say do not just hand out your DL number to just anybody, as to identity theft. I don't put that on anymore, but I put my middle name on them, with a special marker (sig) that easily identifies me as to being that "Lynn" who truly owned the tool(s).

I use 1 gallon plastic jugs (Tradewinds tea, or similar, due to their strength & resiliency). And write on them with a permanent marker & redate as needed. After a few crossouts, I will eventually replace (or back in hand), use bleach to erase the old dates. Sometimes the sun will fade the other info, so just trace it again with the marker. Milk jugs are not good, as the sun breaks them down fast. They get brittle & crack, and if a boat hits them.
