Me too. I'll up it to 15 lb fluoro for heavy cover, but most of my fishing is done around rock banks and light brush in clear water so thinner line absolutely translates to more bites.

I'm a little off here...I throw my square bills on 10# Sunline Sniper. I like the lighter line for tossing the crank a little farther and it dives faster.

There are some pretty stiff copolymers out there though, that stuff is very very strong too. I use izorline xxx and trik fish x for big swimbaits just for that reason. You can't break it in 25lb I agree. P Line CXX is very strong and doesn't stretch much. I also like McCoys Mean green for moving baits. CXX i think is slightly stronger than McCoys but it also has more memory than Mean Green. You can usually get more distance casting with McCoys Mean green.

Big Game is a good monofilament line for the price, but there are co-polymer lines out there that are way better, like McCoys Mean Green, P-Line, Mason, and Izorline.

Question,,,why do you choose to use fluorocarbon line for shallow cranking instead of a monofilament or co-polymer line? I use fluorocarbon line for just about everything else except shallow moving baits. Just wondering if I need to try it out. I use floro so I can feel my bait contacting things and work it thru them, when I used mono it was like reeling in blindly, now I can feel the tick of a blade of grass, etc... Its amazing what you can throw a square bill into if youve got a decent rod and good line to feel it, just pause and let it back up, float a little etc...

You could do worse than big game, but I like a little stiffer rod with it. The sensitivity is less no doubt. I use big game when I want it to run just a little shallower as well. Fluoro feels more connected like Jeff says. I’m not too high on co-polymer but that’s just imo.

I think I will try fluorocarbon on one of my shallow cranking rods and check it out.

The size of the squarebill, the cover you're fishing around, the size of the fish and the water clarity kind of makes it tough to pick a single strength/type of line.
I throw some 1/4 oz balsa squarebills on 12 lb fluoro, but that's only in areas where there's not a lot of cover. Most of the squarebills I throw are 1/2 oz or bigger, and the majority of the time it's around heavy cover. I fished 15 lb Invisx for a long time until trying Bass Pro Shops XPS. The 17 lb XPS casts better and holds up better (for me) than the 15 lb Invisx.
Let the size of the fish and the cover you're fishing around help you decide what line. There's nothing worse than hooking up with a giant and not having the tackle to handle it. I fished a spot on Ft. Gibson that had very sharp vertical rocks and ended up using braid after losing a couple of fish getting cut off on the rocks. I've gotten to the point I use as heavy a line as I can get away with as long as it doesn't hamper my casting or the action of the bait, and that's with everything from shaky heads to flipping. I like how you worded this. Match your tackle to the cover you are fishing! I fish tons of cypress trees in fairly stained water so I use mostly braid. Went to Grand and Table rock and its super clear so needed to use flouro.
