Enjoyed the video, Ben. Where do you and J-Moe find all the energy? I've been to both those places and that's a lot of driving, especially from where you two are coming from. Not to mention all the walking you did.

I'll be turning 60 years old this year and really feel the difference more and more now. But for me spending most of the week indoors at work takes a toll so by the weekend I'm ready to excise all those pent-up frustrations by going outdoors and doing physical things. And if I overdo it on the weekend I've got all week to recover at work! But the truth is I need the outside time to stay sane and have something to look forward to in the next trip.. Not to mention J-Moe is a really good fishing buddy who can tolerate my wayward adventures and is usually willing and able..

I went to Newman Bottom this evening. The white bass were actively spawning.
I caught 14 but 11 of those came from one spot about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. Hopefully things will continue to get better. We got spoiled the last 4 years.

first trip to of the year to newmann's today. planned to scout out changes to the river, find new holes, reminisce over spots that are no longer there.... no expectations to catch much. mission not accomplished. caught 1 after just a couple of casts, then moved down the bank a few yards. stayed there for 3 hours and caught over 20. its early and most were males. not a great day of catching, but its still early. hopefully we get some rain without the whole place flooding out. if so, should be great in a couple of weeks. talked to a lot of folks who passed by. the most I saw anyone with was 2 fish. I say that because all of them seemed to be throwing chartreuse swirly tails on like 1/8oz jig heads. the water is shallow and clear. I was using 1/32oz with a light blue + clear flake straight tailed grub. fish it slow, then slow down some more. must use light line with this. I use 8lb braid so I don't lose many jig heads. mono would probably produce even more bites.

Excellent report Squirrel_nut You pretty much summarized what it takes to be successful right now. I tried a 1/32 ounce jig head fly with no luck, I tried a 1/64 ounce jig head fly and only caught 1. I put on a bead chain clouser and caught 13. I had to throw it upstream of the sweet spot and let it slowly drift down to the fish. I haven't found fish in a lot of my best fishing holes this year. I have heard of some good reports of people walking way downstream, almost to the lake. Maybe since they have started spawning there might be more fish coming up into the shallow areas.

I really got spoiled with the good crappie fishing the last 4 years. I feel like I missed out this year. It's really incredible Jared. I've caught less than a dozen crappie during the run. And not a single one over 10 inches. I haven't been vertically jigging them downstream in the deeper water so I can't get a full view of the problem. But, It sure seems they are even more dependent on flow than the white bass are. Probably a good Fishtales adventure to go up the mouth of Nails to see if the crappie have arrived in their normal spots, the white bass around Irwin and Newman Bottom are annoying me to no end anyway

I took the family out on Sunday afternoon. Saw a couple nice stringers coming from way down stream. Again, near the lake. I saw one fella doing pretty well near the parking lot, but he was the only one. I have a feeling this might be squirrel_nut? Anyway, this fella definitely has some skill because he was out-catching everyone about 10 to 1. Saw some very nice fish caught. I was able to catch a few for dinner which was great for the kids. I had my best luck with the smallest road runner I had, I believe 1/16 oz with red head and curly tail white grub, willow leaf blade. If I were to go back soon, I'd put the lightest line on possible and follow the advice previously suggested with smallest presentation I could and then fish it painfully slow. Sure is pretty out there now, my family had a great time. Good luck to Y'all.

Sunday was an awesome day to take the family out fishing!! Great report Thanks for the confirmation on those stringers coming from downstream. Let's keep hoping they'll make their way upstream. It sure is a lot more water to cover downstream. And a lot more effort

Anyone interested in fishing downstream and doesn't want to walk, hollar at me. I can get you access there by boat. D-TGS
If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

A look back at this time of February in 2012 Saturday February 18, 2012 with several days and inches of rain on already soaked ground the flood water has begun to make it's way to Lake Somerville. This is welcome news for all the springtime whitebass fisherman as this flood water raises the lake to near normal levels allowing the whitebass to enter the creeks to spawn. The staff at Lake Somerville State Park & Trailway is preparing for the onslaught of fisherman from near and far seeking to participate in this annual event. Cedar, Nails and Yegua creeks are by far the most productive and all have miles of fish-able bank located in the state park. Entry into the state park is $3.00 per person, per day, and as long as you are fishing from land within the state park you do not need a fishing license. State limits apply, 10 inch minimum length for crappie and whitebass, 25 fish per day, per fisherman. The whitebass run up the Yegua is never a sure thing but in 2013 it was in full swing by January!
