Let's break down another central Texas lake. This weekend, I'll be fishing Canyon Lake for he first time in many years, and want to ensure my best chance for success. I show you my process of breaking down Canyon Lake, Texas and zone in on key areas that will hold bait and whites, hybrids, and stripers.

When I hit Canyon Lake on Saturday, I will only fish these spots. if my method works, I should be able to find fish in one of these areas. Follow me on FB SkunkedAgain page, and I'll make those waypoints available to you to fish them for yourselves.

I locate 3 jackpot fishing spots, areas that contain 3 key elements to holding fish: River bends, Humps/Points, and creek intersections. For these three jackpot fishing spots, I get those 3 elements and more. Hope you learn something new today to put more fish in the boat. Tim

Nice video! thumb
I agree with your selections, but me personally having fished this lake over many years, I would start at your #3 spot and work my way up river simply because of the fact that the lake is a deep, cold, clear water lake and the upper end will warm quicker with a few bright sunny days.
In the main lake the backs of the coves are going to be warmer water as well.

Just one more cast!

Thanks Jimbo. Great info. Having not been there for a long time, and not really knowing that lake like your description, you'd be saving me from searching areas 1 and 2. I'll start in area 3 based on your experience. I probably would have gotten to Area3 and shallower; it just would have taken a lot longer. Thanks for your tip! Come on out on Saturday and fish next to me if you see me!
Tim

Look for me in a Bluewave, and come up and say hi. Tim

Looks like a good day to be on the water. Overcast days are my best

days this time of the year. Wish I was out there with you . Good luck!

Canyon Lake 2/8. Considering it was my first trip there in over 5 years, not getting skunked and just learning the lake was worth it. I'd call it a bad day, but Bob, who owns a place on the lake told me that was the most fish he'd ever caught on one trip; including a guided trip. I think that tells me what I needed to know; it's a tough lake to fish. As Warren Buffet said once; I'd rather step over a 1 footer than have to jump over a 7 foot bar. Or, fish lakes that have more fish. I post more details on my SkunkedAgain FB page. Tim

Any day is a good day on the water, and getting enough to stink up a frying pan is a bonus ! thumb

I know next to nothing about the science of fishing locations. However, when I take my pontoon out to fish Canyon, I spend most of my time in Tom’s Creek(especially if the winds are strong out of the south) —one of the first areas you diagrammed, and also in the creek cove due west of the northern tip of Cranes Mill point (If the winds are strong out the the north). I will try that last area which looks to be just south of the crappie fishing dock. Thanks!

Ah, thanks for the confirmation. It was a tough fishing day. I'm confident that if the lock-jaw didn't exist that we would have caught more. Thanks for your input. Tim

Canyon is not a very good fishing lake for any species.

Compared other lakes in central Texas, I may have to agree. There are definitely better lakes. I enjoy the challenge sometimes... tim

I live 40 minutes from the ramp and drive 2 hours every fishing day to any other lake. It is not worth wasting a day unless you just want to swim a mess around.
