Don't think motor noise makes them spookier. If so, how does one explain catching fish while trolling and the lure is behind the boat ? The lure is usually running the same path close to the prop wash and noise from the motor. Growing up, my dad had a 2-stroke Mariner 30. It rattled like nobody's business, but when fish would school, they would stay up if we kept the motor running. If we turned it off, they would go back down 9 times out of 10. I now have a Honda 4-stroke. I troll for stripers and have tremendous success. I also use live bait and anchor lock over schools of hybrids/stripers. Sometimes schools are active and sometimes they are not. As I am graphing, i use my big motor to maneuver the boat and when I find a school, I engage my autopilot. I never shut the motor off until I catch a fish. I think sudden noises spook them more than consistent.

I used to drift fish the flats between the island and the state park during the winter time, especially icy days. I was younger then and listened to my stereo a lot. I am telling the absolute truth; I would consistently catch more fish playing ZZ-Top or Stevie Ray Vaughn than anything else. Eventually it became a fishing tool when there was a slow day, I'd put the ZZ-Top tape in and boom, the fish were there. Damn near deaf now so I don't listen to the stereo, and don't catch as much fish either. I think those thumper things must have a similar beat as some of the classic rock music. I told my fishing partner that rather then buy or build a thumper we just need to put an amp and subwoofer on the stereo
