You can use heavier pound test fluorocarbon or monofiliment to make the bait run closer to the surface or to subdue the action of the crankbait but I honestly don't fool with that. I'm never so dialed into a pattern that I feel like I need four rods with the same bait and different pound test lines on my deck.

I use Mono (Big Game) on my square bills. Deeper cranks I like to use floro, usually InvisX.

I prefer 15lb flouro for a squarebill. Seaguar invisx or red label.
I don't trust 12lb or less when fishing around any kinda cover. I'll only use it for jerkbaits or when trying to get a deep diving crank down deeper.

15 lb Big Game For most situations 12 lb Invisx if the water is extremely clear or if I want it to run a little deeper.
