You ever had a fish take off with your rod into the depths? Was crappie fishing yesterday with a cheap little setup 5.5’ rod and Walmart baitcaster. Was fishing Suspended minnows in about 12-15 ft range and caught a few. Had one rod leaned over in my boat with a bobber on and out of no where the rod just torpedoes into the water. I’ve caught some big crappie on these setups as well as decent catfish. My drag wasn’t thaaaattt tight but obviously wasn’t loose enough. I’m guessing it was a good sized catfish that took off wth it. Stupid mistake by me, hopefully the fish broke it off and survived

My daughter was paying more attention to her snapchat than her rod one evening and we lost a $300 rod/reel combo that torpedoed in to the depths. I was able to snag the fishing line about an hour later with some treble hooks and pulled in the combo with a 20 lbs carp on the end of her line.

Oh man... I didn’t even try to get mine back lol probably should’ve given that a go. Luckily my setup on that was only like 45$

Oh yes, fishing with my daughter when she was old enough to be on the back deck by herself. All of the sudden I hear her start crying and expected to see a hook in a finger. She had made a long cast and launched the whole rod and reel out into the deep water. Luckily I had braid on her reel so the line floated and we got it back quickly.

I've had several clients over the years who would sit their rod down while lighting a cigarette or getting a drink only to watch it launch into the water. The funny thing is that it happens fast enough that you can't get to it, but slow enough that you can watch it slowly descend into the depths

It fell it the deck hit a rod and bounced in to the water. I watch the screen wobble like a spoon for several feet. Nothing you can do.. but I didn’t have the phone bother me the rest of the weekend!

My son and I were fishing for cats one day on the pond at the family ranch. We were sitting on the tailgate of my truck and it was slow so we laid our poles on the tailgate while we at lunch. All of a sudden my pole leaps from the tailgate into the grass a few feet away. The boy and I look at each other sort of like WTH, then the pole starts sliding through the grass into the pond. I run over and grab my pole and give it a set pull and feel the resistance. I reel in a blue cat about three and a half pounds.

Several years later I'm fishing off the dock at the same pond. I have my pole rigged for bottom fishing for cats and I have a Zebco 300 rig I'm using for little Spring sunfish/perch. The cats were slow so I prop the rod up against the rail and start walking around the edge of the pond to try different spots I know that the little stuff like to hang out in. I keep looking over at the cat rigged pole. Well I end up on the opposite side of the pond (about a 1.5 acre pond) and when I get back to the dock my cat rig is gone. I look around and don't see it anywhere. Some cat took off with may favorite set up, a nice Ugly Stick with a Ambassadeur 5000 reel I'd had for over 25 years.
When we sold the ranch a few years ago I told the new owner that if he ever drained the pond or it just got real low and he found that rig I wanted it back.

A few years ago a buddy and I were fishing off a dock at Greenville Club Lake. One of the rigs I'm using is a custom Heddon Pal Pro Weight sport rod with an Ambassadeur 2500C that had belonged to my Wife's father (it was probably 35 - 40 years old). Heddon was known for fily rods and only made a handful of these sport rods. The Heddon was set up with a bobber and minnow was laying on the dock while I was tossing a mini Rattletrap on the other side. I hear a noise and turn to see the Heddon rig moving towards the edge of the dock and I start running. My hand was just a couple inches from it when one more jerk and it's over the edge and into the water.
My Wife loved and adored her father, and the thought of me going home and telling her I had lost that rig was filling me with dread. The guy that owned the dock we were on was one of my Wife's, and her Father's, law partners and he knew what I was facing as well. We got a small surf rod and put on a great big treble hook with an 8 oz weight.and I commenced to dragging under, and all around, the dock After about 30 minutes I finally snagged it but just as it got close to the surface it kept slipping out of the big treble. So the next time I get it close to the surface my buddy takes my other rig with the rattltrap very carefully hooks one of the eyes of the Heddon and we get it close enough that I can grab it with my hand. Hooray!!!! Beers for all. More beers for all.
I still use that Heddon rig, but I don't set it down unattended.

So yeah, I've seen it happen a few times.

It happens more than ya think.

Luke 6:22-23

22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you, insult you,
and slander your name as evil
because of the Son of Man.

23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Take note—your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.

I've lost 2 rod/reel combinations in Lake Lavon and have retrieved a rig belonging to someone else. Score: -1 blush

I was catfishing on the bank of Texhoma years ago and was catching some. I was dealing with a fish when I herd a noise and I saw a ripple in the water. About a minute later I relised one of my rods was gone. After that I started using a better rod holder and tying my rods to them.

I had one yanked overboard at the coast at night, original green Curado 200. I fished the spot for an hour or so more and only catching gulf trout so I moved down the bank 100 yards where some activity was heard. About 10 casts into it with a DOA shrimp I hooked my rod right at the cork handle and recovered it. Pretty odd thing to do during the ripping tidal movement. Didn't have a fish on it and still had the plastic DOA shrimp. I switched lures.

me and my cousin was redfishing one time when he laid his rod against the side on the boat. all of a sudden i got yanked out of the boat, we both looked at each other and with no word said leaped out of the boat to search for it (only about 2-3 foot deep where we was). i was wearing flip flops and caught the line between toes and i followed it one way my cousin went the other. i found the rod, my cousin found about a 21-22 inch red that wrapped itself around a log.
