I would take some earthworms with you and throw out at least one rod with a worm on it, especially early in the trip. That way you can see what is there besides carp and a carp will hit a worm. When the carp start biting you can concentrate on them, but the worms may give you some fun action while you are waiting. All these hardcore carp guys will wait all day for a good carp (lol) but your wife and boy may have more fun if they are catching something while waiting for the carp.

Those carp in the Rebecca Creek area are there 24/7. No need to "bait" it up. Just go out there and chum it up a little just to get them to come around and stick around. My buddy goes out there during the week with wheaties and big red to catch 3-4 carp for catfish bait almost weekly.

For sure going to do that....might even pick up some minnows to throw out as well. Whites might be moving by now. sb

Man, they make this way too hard. Throw some range cubes, dog food, or whatever in the water. The sooner the better, a day ahead is great. We used slightly soured grain or deer corn. Then catch fish with some oats mixed with Big Red or similar pressed into a ball around a treble hook. I started doing this at 6-7 years old with my brothers at the rivers around Ballinger and have NEVER had an issue catching rough fish..... In fact, who can't catch carp. By far the easiest thing to catch. Easy to locate, easy to get schooled up (a little chum), and ridiculously easy to hook up. Have fun! They do fight like a beast! You're right, that's one way to catch them! There are better ways however, for both you and the fish. Treble hooks have an inferior hookup ratio and get worse hookholds than the hair rig. Not to mention trebles can really mess up a Carp's mouth. If you break off using a treble it could potentially stitch the mouth together eventually starving and killing the fish. Small Carp can definitely be easy to catch, especially after a good chumming. The big ones are a different story though! This method caught us carp as big as any posted on this forum. But I will admit, those treble hooks did in fact turn their mouths into hamburger! We didn’t care about that though since we kept all of ours to give to folks anyway.
It's only a good cast if you catch a fish... Personal Best: 11.62 lbs

We would ride our bikes the 3 miles to the river. Had pvc tied on as rod holders and our small tackle boxes tied to the crossbar of the handlebars. Great times! Miss those days. But anyway, good luck Sean

Most packbaits are actually really simple and not much different than what you suggested... we use bread crumbs, oats, sweetcorn and strawberry jello. But everyone has their own mix that works best in their area. I've used big red several times in place of strawberry jello when I didn't have any on hand

My old man caught 1 in Rebecca creek on the second day....went about 5lbs. He dumped it before I could get a pic. That was it for bites. Pop did say it was the hardest fighting fish he has ever caught it fresh water, and it was his first. I was there when he caught a 10lb bass, so there is that.
Must be doing something way wrong....anyway, gonna try some local ponds next.
