Always wear a personal flotation device when boating guys.

Always.

I read on the Fayette Fishing Forum that it was 5 cast net fishermen moving across the lake in the early hours of the morning in a flat bottom boat. These fisherman are known for overloading their boats with caught fish. All of them are accounted for now. 3 drowned and 2 survived.

I kind of thought it would be Tilapia netters. Notorious for overloading their often smaller boats. Sad deal for sure.

I really wish the game wardens would crack down on them at the lake. This tragedy could be prevented if a game warden had checked. I've fished that lake for over 40 years in everything from a bay boat to a bass buster 8ft boat and even a 12ft john boat. It's not difficult to use common sense with regards to safety. Unfortunately those who don't, can get caught up in tragedies such as this.

Probably preaching to the choir as this group seems to be highly experienced but here goes.

Was at Fayette on Saturday, about a month ago (my first mistake). The weather forecast was for a cold front to come in but it came in a bit early. Many fishermen were putting on rain gear as the line of showers coming was clearly visible. I decided to fish through it but my rain gear was leaking so I headed back to the ramp. In the midst of this a guy in one of those plastic fishing type of boats (about 6-8' long) was heading away from the ramp toward the dam and was in the middle of the lake when I started back toward the ramp. He added plywood decking, battery, troll motor and about a 4 HP motor. Needless to say he wasn't doing too well as he was way overloaded. I turned around to check on him as he was taking on water. No life jacket on and after my suggestion, he pulled it out from under the deck and put it on. Then his outboard died. I towed him to the nearest shore so he could get water out (no pump, no bucket, no cup, nothing). After circling to give him time to figure out a game plan we decided best bet was for him to get in my boat and tow his back to the ramp. Idle speed was best we could do because any faster and the boat turned into a torpedo.

Although soaking wet, he managed to get his boat back on the trailer and get warmed up. The young man was from the Metroplex and never been to Fayette. He was there to fish a tournament.
The point of this post is to remind all that we need to respect the weather and do our part to see that our boats are up to the conditions. He clearly would have been better off in a kayak. Without pointing out the obvious I suggested he re-think the overloaded fishing buggy if he ever decides to return to Fayette. For a small lake, it can get rough.

Yea, for sure. Plus 1 for Fish2Chill. My family had property in that area for years, lived in Bastrop when I was in college so I fished Fayette, Bastrop and the highland lakes quite a bit. You definitely need to have a healthy respect for any of those lakes. IMO, Fayette is especially bad because its more bowl shaped and if there is any wind around, that lake will get it. Always amazed me how fast and violent storms could blow up. Definitely a sad event.
