It was five cast netter guys in a flat bottom boat. A friend of mine saw the boat loaded down with guys that same afternoon and he said it was real close to sinking then because it was over loaded with people.

I think we saw the boat by the discharge. They dropped 2 of them off on the bank with a net and ice chest. They were paddling with no motor and the boat didn't have a lot of freeboard with just 3 in the boat. IMO, it looked like a 12x36 aluminum - 14x36 at the biggest. We saw that boat about 2:00. Man that sucks. I wonder if the 2 survivors were the 2 on the bank if it was actually the same boat we saw. It looked to be like they came from the Park Prairie launch

I have seen that boat several times, usually near the discharge. Last time there were two guys on the north side of the discharge, and two in the boat, including one girl. It was a rough day on Fayette that day, I don't see how they got back to either ramp.

Normally the boats I see out there are only there during the day. Reports are they had no life vests and alcohol was found on boat. It’s sad people died even though they were on the lake illegally. I haven’t seen any game wardens out there in several years and used to get checked every other trip.

I know some are saying it happened at night, but technically I'm sure that is correct. The information is authorities 'received a call at 10pm'. And I think at least 1 article said it came from the 2 survivors, but even if it came from family at home my bet is it happened very near sunset (6:00-6:30).

Personally, I see more game wardens on Fayette than all the other lakes put together. I was just checked there the week prior. Last year, I was checked no less than 4 times and saw them at least 2 dozen. They finally I guess recognized my boat and quit checking me. But they definitely were looking for a particular type most of the time.

Bizarre, I've fished Fayette well over 100 times and have never been checked a single time.

Last time I saw a game warden on Fayette was over 12 years ago. That was Eric Nigren (sp) and I'm not sure if he is still in the area or not.

We've taken our canoe out to Fayette several times, and nearly every time a wind blows up with chop way higher than a lake that size warrants. I've canoed _the_entire_Mississippi_River_ and I've not been scared of swamping like I've been at Fayette. What gives? Is it something in the water?

My opinion - it is a combination of 2 things. The lake is very deep for such a small lake and most importantly it just opens itself up to north and south winds perfectly. And possibly a 3rd reason is that it has some long shallow points that stick out in the lake. I think these may push the water up as the waves cross these points. The good thing is the waves tend to stay much closer together than the bigger lakes. I have never been on it, where my bass boat couldn't span the troughs fairly easy. That doesn't do you much good in a kayak and might possibly make it even worse.

@barbarian, I like your explanation. I think those waves are closer together than usual. The canoe can't roll with them as easily, and if we're going downwind, they just wash over the stern, filling the boat half cup by half cup.

Its just an open lake, which means wind has plenty of time to build waves. Coleto creek is a larger lake, but not difficult to fish in high winds and usually very safe.

I have been checked a a few times in the last 5 years on Fayette, 0 times on all other lakes I fish.
