Last year this time I was smashing Red Ear and Blues along with occasional LMB.....I have moved bit west. I caught more fish in one trip last year than I have caught all season long...(this is talking about freshwater, salt has been good).
Just venting....but dammit, I want to take my kid and wife out to catch fish semi-local. San Angelo area, AMISTAD (ugh!) and even so far as Medina.
Anyway, any others struggling this year?

It has been an unusual year for me too. Some of my very consistent areas have been almost void of fish.

2018 was terrible for me. I knew that I was fishing at a reasonably high level and fishing water that held fish, you could see them on the electronics. But it seemed like every time I had a chance to go the weather conditions were terrible. 2019 was better and hopefully 2020 will be better yet. But as Big Lunker stated, its FISHING not catching.
Where there is deep clear water with hydrilla and a decent population of lunker largemouth like Amistad there is going to be big red ears and bluegills. They are there, don't be discouraged. You will just have to adapt to the behavior of the fish in that body of water. One of my favorite lakes is Stillhouse Hollow and it is deep, clear and full of hydrilla. There is a big part of the year that you can't get on top of the fish if they are less than 15' deep. You have to stay back and cast with a drop shot or split shot rig if they are spawning. Or a slip float rig if they are suspending above the weed beds and feeding. If you can see them they can see you and the bigger mature fish have grown big by being wary.
I personally haven't started chasing perch yet because its a little early and the white bass bite has been really good. But as soon as the weather warms and the flowers start blooming there will be plenty of worm dirt in the carpet of my boat.

If it's all about taking the kid and wife out to catch fish, reconsider the species you are fishing for.
When my wife and I lived in San Antonio, we fished the Texas coast almost every weekend. When we moved to North Texas, she was completely bored with bass fishing. Now with 4 kids, we don't want 5-6 poles slinging baits. So now as a "family" we primarily fish for carp and catfish and have a blast!!

You have excellent fishing on the nueces river. Google earth is your friend. Head south on hwy55 and fish off the county roads off of 55 that cross the nueces. Barksdale and camp wood have lots of public access to the nueces around them. Dont forget nueces lake just south of camp wood. It has some huge gills and nice flatheads

It happens to everyone. Keep chunking and winding. See my other responses for a similar question.

From a trip this weekend. The one with the blue rod is because it was the very first cast with the zebco rod and reel they replaced under warranty. sb
