Lot of hard work by those kids. Teaches them responsibility as such My sisters and I showed steers through high school. You are right it is A LOT of work. My senior year I had 5 steers. Wake up, go take care of steers, go to school, go check on steers, go to work for 3 to 4 hours, go take care of steers, go home for supper and any homework, go to bed. Repeat the next day. It is a lot more than just throwing feed in front of them if you are doing it right. At least 3 of the 5 were washed, brushed out, blown dry and combed everyday. A lot of days it was all 5. I would not trade it for anything though. I couldn't believe it when I heard a Hereford was overall Grand Champion. First time since 1982. The overall Reserve Grand Champion was a Hereford as well. Herefords used to win a lot of the time what breed do you like ?

I wasn’t knocking the Hereford breed at all. Just saying it had been a long time since it won it all at a stage like that.

Black Angus is exploding in popularity. There were 30 in my daughters class at FWSSR this year. Never been that many before.

The Hereford surprises me as well as a winner. As for myself, I have no red cattle, the black ones typically bring more money at the sale each week, and that's what matters to me. I showed my last Steer in 1992, Chi-Angus and Black Limousine was the the way to go then. A kid could also compete with an animal out of their own herd as well. My grandad sold the Grand Champion Steer at Ft Worth in the mid1980's straight out of our pasture to a local kid at whatever market price was at the time. It came out of the same bull as my animal did that year, and beat me by a few places. As far as today's standards, it is a thriving business to raise show animals and sell them for insane amounts of money to a kid that wants to be competitive. It goes back to the deep pocketed parents a lot of the time. I also know a few that the parents and/or their ranch hands do all the work and the kid may or may not help with the animal except to show it. One of my close friends raises show pigs, and it is a very lucrative business, and you can not come close to purchasing one of his for a reasonable price. The show animal projects were designed to teach kids responsibility, to keep records and finances, and learn a little about agriculture. Like most other things, it is really not that way any more.
