Every year around this time I start getting anxious and excited about fishing the run in the Lampasas, Leon, and SanGabriel. Followed by the shad spawn at Belton and then topwater in the early morning hours. I’ve somewhat learned the shad spawn and topwater at Belton but every time I go I drive right past Stillhouse. I’d like to fish the reservoir but don’t have any history there and I’m on a kayak. If anybody has a general area to hit the shad spawn or look for topwater later I’d greatly appreciate it and help anyway I can on Belton.

I had great luck going up cowhouse creek from Belton last year. Just don`t go past the bridge, else your on a live fire range in ft hood. There are no signs and they don`t have any sense of humor on the subject, none. Really as shame, my very favorite fishing spot on all of belton is in there.

Belton is full of smallish whites right now. I have good luck on stillhouse just across the way from Dana Peak Park. And this area is good for a kayak

I appreciate that Boomer it’s just a short drive for me to get to Dana Peak. I’ve heard so much about Cowhouse and have wanted to try but haven’t made it. I guess the first calm day I should just put in and get to paddling. I had great luck last year around the mouth of Owl Creek on Belton.

On Stillhouse, the whites are hanging out by the dam right now and make a run up the Lampassas in the next month or three. so put in at either Cedar Gap, and head upriver chasing them or put in at gravel crossing off 2484. Thats where alot of yakers put in chasing whites every year. Just be aware, there have been instances of folks vehicles getting broke into at gravel crossing since its so remote.

Good luck

Used to put in at gravel crossing a lot back in the 90s and up till 2005 . Heard they have the launch (not the small parking area) fenced off, does anyone know if this is just to keep powerboaters out or for some other reason? As far as the date for fishing it, it used to be March 6th without fail every year.

If I recall, the fence was erected due to folks parking vehicles on the ramp, and some getting stuck recovering boats. that used to be a very nice place to go fishing back in the day

It’s not a fence but a small guardrail at gravel crossing. No problem getting a kayak or johnboat down there.

correct, pipe fence, bad use of words on my part. We used to launch the boat (trailered) on the dirt ramp there. Lots of folks would get stuck if they didn't have 4 wheel drive if it was muddy. And of course there was a nice dropoff that would catch a few trailers if you went back too far.

Kayaks and jon boats have never been an issue thumb

Anyone catching them on the San Gabriel? I've always wondered about catching them near where the South San Gabriel crosses 183 around Leander. Is there fishable water in that area?

Does anyone know the water level situation on the Lampasas River? It's been years, but if I remember correctly, in normal rainfall years you usually had to pull a medium sized boat through the water nearest the first gravel bar (1st one past the gravel crossing). I have a 20' aluminum modified V boat, so I'm curious as to whether I can get past that point.

Last year was no problem for any boat even past gravel crossing. I’m trying to get there Sunday afternoon and I’ll let you know if nobody else beats me.

The rivers good for a kayak, canoe, flat bottom but I’m not sure about anything else unless you know the river. I was using a 1.5 square bill that swims anywhere between 3-5 feet and it drug the bottom a couple times. From gravel crossing I paddled a mile toward Stillhouse before getting anything and only caught two, both keeper females.

As long as Stillhouse lake is at conservation pool,(622 ft) small power boats have no problem making it up from the main lake to the end of the tailwater to fish the white bass run. It is not a river flow problem, rather a lake level problem (except that stronger river flows result in a stronger run). Trailer launches are not possible at gravel crossing at any water level but canoes and kayaks are fine there.
