I am curious, when fishing points, how effective is it (if at all) to sit on the shallow side and throw out to the deeper water? I don't see many people doing this, but have talked to a couple of people recently who have said they do this with some good success. Just wondering if there are very many who have tried this. Only asking because I am not a good deep water fisherman and am really wanting to expand my knowledge on this.

Think about how a bass relates to a point the majority of the time. Are they pushing bait or waiting for bait to fall off the ledge? I've done it both ways, but don't have evidence one way is "better"

I would think it depends on several factors - how the fish are positioned, wind direction, bait fish, etc. - but most of all, what the fish want.

What I believe. LMB are lazy and like to look up current and would rather wolf down prey moving toward them than chasing.

With all things equal, I'd say position yourself down current (this is usually down wind), and cast up current or into the wind and retrieve.

Rarely, I have seen differences casting into the sun and retrieving vs opposite direction (with casting into the sun being the better option--maybe the bass can see the silhouette better casting into the sun)

In line with what David typed.......Imho, most of the time the bass are set up to take advantage of any current (wind or water being pulled). This factor could have me sitting shallow coming up the rise, deep coming down the drop, or on one side or the other coming across the point. Good luck in your efforts going deeper. I spend about 90% of my fishing time from 12-35 fow, and although more people are out there than ever, I am never crowded or cutoff out there.

I'll add that the bottom cover may influence what you can do effectively. Soft mud bottom to sand or small gravel, you can work the point from any angle. Hard boulder/rocky bottoms, you'll get snagged more often than not working from deep to shallow so your bottom-contact lures are limited to working roughly parallel to the slope or shallow to deep most of the time.

It doesn’t matter which way your bait gets any place near a bass. They are aware. Livescope makes this obvious

current dictates bass positioning. not only helps in easy ambush but also for dissolved oxygen intake without moving very much. bass get the most for nothing usually in all aspects of their lives, kinda cool actually how efficient they are.

I'm with the masses above...current, wind, and cover dictate bait positioning and how I present the lure.

Interesting observation.

Can be cranking behind a bass swimming the same way as lure and they’ll turn around and smash it sometimes as far as 5’ behind them. When they come up off the bottom to investigate they come from every direction. Here in Texas I can See lures at 55-60 feet. At home about 30 is the best case scenario so I’m having a lot of fun watching most of my retrieves. Sooooo many followers

So, if you are fishing wind blown points, you would get on the point to cast into the wind?

I always start by casting into the wind. However, if I'm marking fish and cannot get them to bite I will cast at them from every direction possible. Sometimes they will bite it from any direction, sometimes they won't bite it unless you drag it right in front of their face.
