I just changed rigs to a 08 Ranger Z22 and it has older technology Lowrance electronics on it. So I want to upgrade those. Lowrance, Humminbird or Garmin and why please.

I use Lowrance because they link with my MG Xi5 trolling motor which is a nice feature. I would get which ever will link to the trolling motor I have or plan to get....

after being a lifelong bird user (over 40 yrs.) I just went to garmin.
2 93sv plus, 1 bow/1 console and the force trolling motor.
loving this set up, graphs/tm/phone all link with wifi from the units, updates are super simple using the phone, can create your own 1' contour maps if you want to. images are a lot better than my 898/998 were, graphs do a ton more than the birds did.
so far with just 2 trips with the whole shebang I am more than impressed.

As a current Garmin guy I like them. However to compare a brand new Garmin to a 7-9 year old technology Humminbird is not applicable. They have all got better images than older equipment.

pick a vendor and build your electronics around the brand. Example...choose Lowrance and choose a trolling motor like Motorguide that works with it.

Long time bird owner, just bought a new boat went with Gen 3 units and an iPilot Terrova , so far I am happy. All have their benefits, as do Ford, Chevy and Dodge.
You really want to get confused, take a look at Jacob Wheeler's set up on the front of his boat.

So start off maybe simpler and be like "do I like my motorguide/minn kota/garmin/lowrance trolling motor and does it have some sort of ipilot/steering built in??" and if the answer is "yes" then key your other electronic purchases towards them. I like motorguide and I like lowrance BUT if starting from brand new then I am really interested in the garmin technology and imaging!

Humminbird may be the most affordable but I think it boils down to what your interest are.

But that of course means if one thing goes then the whole unit is usually bad. I have fished a lot of the Opens and its great to see all the different anglers setups and getting to ask questions about it. That being said I haven't fished with anyone yet that has the forward looking "live sonar" but may get too later this year if my Rayburn Open co-angler thing goes thru!

IMO, Birds have the best side imaging and mapping available, lowrance has the best 2D, and Garmin obviously has the best forward facing (Live scope).
