What do the 2 tension knobs on a baitcaster do?

I only know of one, but it puts tension on the spool to slow it down.

One slows the spool at the end of the cast. The other at the start of the cast.

There’s three knobs.
The one opposite of the handle is spool tension. The star shaped one behind the handle is the drag adjustement. The third is on most bait casters and it varies in position, style, and size. It’s the spool braking system adjustment.

One slows the spool the other slows the fish.

Depending on the reel, there is a drag- usually a star shape right behind the reel handles- this is how much tension the fish can pull line out away from you.

Then there is a larger knob on the same side as reel handle that I would call "course adjustment" - how fast the bait will cast. Reel a bait to the end of your rod tip. hold rod in the air. without moving rod- press button on reel? does the bait fall fast? slowly? or not at all? tighten it to not fall- loosen it off so it falls slowly.

Then there is the "fine adjustment" maybe wind is at your face now and you can't control your backlash. Tighten or push tab closer to max and it will help you not backlash.

Hopefully this is what you're referring to.

Tension knob by the handle slows at end of cast and the one opposite the Handle slows at beginning?

Exactly frank. Lol. The wind slows it in the middle.

Yes.

Set the end of cast one so that it just drops slowly w the weight of whatever lure hanging on the line and a little rod shake to male it move. As you get better with these reels your thumb can replace this knobs action for the most part and you can loosen it more.

The other knob I set as high as possible numerically then cast. If the line isn’t jumping off the spool at the start you can lower it numerically and get more distance.

I’ll turn that knob up a few numbers when I tie on something different etc. I’d rather have a short cast vs back lash.

In Laymen’s terms. Some of y’all don’t know how to adjust a baitcaster. roflmao

A spool tension knob isn’t designed to slow the spool. It’s designed to take the side to side motion out of the spool. The brakes and your thumb is the control over spool speed.

it puts tension on the spool thus slowing it.

Yes sir in laymans terms. But nobody bothered to ask FTT what his baitcasters were like. You mentioned 3 knobs or adjustments. That's only on higher end modern reels. I have some that are very functional that only have 1 + a drag. Some don't even have a thumb bar! EGAD!!!! Not all tension knobs for the spool are under the handle. A little fact finding goes a long way.

If you know your equipment, line weight, and lure you only need to adjust the spool tension. The centrifugal braking systems that are like training wheels can be utilized for fine tuning.

It’s a side effect that is improperly used to slow the spool. Over tightening the spool tension causes premature shaft wear. Properly adjusted, it should simply remove side to side play in the spool. Not detract from the spools ability to spin freely.
