Do worm hooks tend to have a better hook up percentage than EWG hooks when fishing regular worms like senkos, brush hogs or power worms tec.? I use EWG for flukes, but do worm hooks have a better hook up percentage? Think I saw zona once talking about this and it's where I got it from.

For anything bulky you want a EWG. The plastic will bunch up on the hook when compressed by a fish closing it's mouth or you setting the hook and the smaller gap on the hook combined with the plastic equals the less open surface area of hook to penetrate. To run a test hook a plastic on a hook and simulate a bite with your hand and see how much of the hook point is exposed. A EWG willl expose more on a bulkier bait every time.

Thanks Chance, and that's what I thought which is why I always use EWG with flukes. Maybe I'm not remembering what Zona said right.

My opinion the EWG style works most of the time. During High pressure days or lots of fishing pressure, sometimes the fish just do not eat the bait real well. That is when the Offset hook will work better then the EWG. Recognizing those times is the fun part.

on those baits i use offset round bend vmc. usually hooked in roof of mouth.

ewg on those baits is usually hooked in the lips

I use ewg for huge worms thats about it.

Stumbled across this the other day while watching videos from the most recent BASS open and it addresses this question.

https://youtu.be/Jo2FVciGzq4

Todd is specifically talking about a speed worm and how he used it, but but he goes into why he chose a regular worm hook over a ewg. Just some food for thought.

^^^^, I saw that too and it made a lot of sense, for me I’ve always hooked up better with off set round bends.

I use 4/0 owner beast hooks on a fluke and the hook up ratio is ridiculous

I use a straight shank on anything I can get away with. They have the largest gap between the point and the line tie between anything, and I feel that the hook up ratio is a lot better. And when you do stick a fish its in the good part of the jaw/cheek compared to a lip.

I will go EWG when I have too due to the style of bait.

I pretty much use a 4 off set for everything except flukes and Carolina rig 3/2 off set. However, I’m starting to look into the flipping hooks. Last year flipping docks with braid, 7’3 heavy action rod.... I started bending hooks pretty bad on fish over 3 pounds. Gamakastu brand on everything.

Not a fan of the ewg on anything except flukes, swim batis

What do you all prefer for a basic light Texas rig with the Pit Boss?
I've been using EWG almost exclusively. Should I consider changing to something else?
