FIL been in rough shape for a while. Will soon pass from natural causes. Since Saturday he is no longer eating or drinking water. How long can a person live like this? We are surprised he has held out this long but he is a tough old dude. He has hospice care and is on morphine.

Water is the big factor. A person can linger for a good while by not eating. Can't give you any kind of time frame for either. Sorry that you and your wife are having to deal with this. If on a morphine drip, enough liquids can be snuck in to keep him more comfortable. Best wishes and good luck.

It's a tough situation, mom was in hospice for 2 weeks before she passed. She was ready, and this is morbid, but they told us when the high temp fever set in, it wouldn't be long. It was with in 24 hours she passed. They actually called it the death fever.

No liquids is 3 - 5 days. if he's on an IV it could stretch out for weeks, hopefully it will happen sooner and the family doesn't have to go through the pain of watching them waste away.
