Short story. Camping/fishing 3 days and 1st day 2 reels were rough. So I cleaned the old grease out and used tohatsu marine grade grease (that's all I had). Reels performed great for the duration of the trip. Should I leave them be or clean out the grease and re-lube with penn grease now I am home?

Alumacraft: If everything could be reliably sealed, all one would need is oil. Grease is oil, thickened with lithium soap, or calcium soap. The load-carrying element in grease is oil. Grease peddlers sell us on moisture resistance, EP(extreme pressure) additives, like MolyDiSulfide, teflon, and hocus pocus. As long as your metal-to-metal contacts(gears, bushings, sliding elements), don't get dry, hot, or caked with salt, you don't need anything other than grease. Your outboard grease will work fine in your reels, unless you REALLY wind them fast. At your next reel service episode, clean all the mating parts, and lube them with quality reel grease.
By the way two of the best EP grease additives EVER, are silver and arsenic, both either prohibited or prohibitively expensive for lubricants. My $.02, for what you paid. IslandJim

Another thing: It's not advisable to mix calcium soap grease and lithium soap grease, so to be safe, clean all the old grease off before re-lubing anything.
