Have a boat with two power poles and a Fortrex tm. Would like to upgrade to an Ultrex and thinking about selling one of the power poles to cover the extra $$. This is a new boat and I've never had power poles before so I don't know the difference......yet.

How do you primarily fish? If you are a shallow water guy or enjoy sight fishing for spawning bass having 2 poles will make a huge difference. If you primarily fish offshore and would just use the pole while loading/unloading or randomly then you'll prob be ok with one. You just get swung around too much with 1 if you like to fish shallow. Good luck!

I originally installed 1 pole and within 3 months I installed the 2nd. You can get by with 1 pole but it takes dealing with the boat swing in any breeze. The second pole prevents any boat swing. I now have 2 poles and an ultrex. Both serve a distinct purpose. When fishing deeper water in windy conditions nothing beats the ultrex, but when fishing shallower water and not wanting to disturb the area then the poles canโt be beat

You'll have to get used to setting up for boat swing with one pole, but can be plenty effective once you get used to it.

One takes pre planning when pulling up to the spot to determine wind direction and which way the boat will turn. It's a little PIA but you get used to it. Like others said there is no substitute for the spotlock. You can also use one pole and use the spotlock to keep you in the right direction. I gave up my single talon and got spotlock and never regretted it. I can use the spotlock shallow or deep so I haven't missed anything yet.

Just sell both, buy a big fiberglass push pole, shove it through the jack plate when you want to anchor. I see no need for poles if you have spotlock on a trolling motor.... unless you bed fish all year

Yes, 2 Power Poles are way better than 1.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

I would rather have none than one based on my personal experience. I fish alone a lot and they get a ton of use for beaching while I park etc. Plus I prefer to fish shallow if I can and they come in handy for that. New boat came with an Ultrex and I am learning to use it more out deep.

Way better in my opinion for 2. Zero noise once anchored also compared to an ultrex. It's a must have for sight fishing or anytime you're up shallow and want to fish a particular spot for awhile

Is 5 G's plus future malfunctions down the road worth sitting on a shallow spot that holds a lot of fish that anglers 10 years ago caught the snot out of without either the ultrex or poles? Personal preference!
If you can't find em wind em.

Personal preference! They caught a lot back in the day with sculling paddles and paper graphs but I bet you have neither on your boat. I doubt they were posting on a fishing site on the internet but here we are. If you are paying $5000 for an Ultrex or a set of Power Poles then you way overpaid.

Yes big time, one is awesome. I had one for 3 years, I bought an le with 2. The difference is considerably better.
