I'm in the process of getting water and electricity installed to a hill where I'm going to eventually build a home.
I need advice on what kind of line to run, poly pipe or PVC? I was going to go with 1" scheduled 40 10" PVC but also have read where guys use poly. Poly pipe is much cheaper but looks to be a pain to handle, unless you do it right.
I'm going to tap in to my sister's existing water line and run our line about 1/4 mile slightly uphill.
Anyone have any thoughts on using PVC or poly pipe?
Thank you Lord for the gifts in my life

Poly pipe does not crack and leak as esy in freezing conditions. I have a lot of it in use and it expands when it freezes but never cracks. It also hold up to the elements better IMO. Pretty easy to work with if you lay it out in the sun on a warm day then work with it.

what pressure is the poly rated for?
also how big is the pressure tank on her well? may need to up to a larger size to push that much water.
I would do pvc were it me.

No offense but you may want to look at calculating a fixture count of the house you want to build and then given the distance, 1 inch of either poly or PVC probably is going to be too small. Maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inch line size.

1" would not be a good idea at that distance unless you kept your flow at or below 5 GPM. 1.5" SCH 40 PVC would be my choice.

Her line is city water. Not sure if that matters? It doesn't come from a well. We tried drilling a well and never hit water so we told the guy to stop before we got to the point we couldn't afford it. So you guys think bigger diameter poly because of the distance?

If you use poly you will need a heating tool to connect the ends to a threaded piece with metal threads on the ends.
But you will have very few connections.
You could even price a roll that will cover the entire length in 2", but pvc ciuld be cheaper over that distance.

Your in serious danger of having terrible supply pressure
call it what you will...he is not definitely not anywhere near the top of the list for QB's that I would choose needing a FG or touchdown drive late in the game.

That's what i'm personally worried about Silvers.....water pressure. I guess i'm wondering why some people are suggesting to go bigger than 1" poly or pvc? I initially was going to use 3/4".
I believe poly is much cheaper than PVC or am I mistaken?

I go as big as the well will pump, and step down in size of pipe along the way. There a formulate to calculate the head pressure and loss https://www.westada.org/cms/lib/ID0...aterSupply%20Pressure%20Calculations.pdfthis might help you

Ryno, the reason for bigger diameter is for friction pressure loss. It is different in different types of pipe and tubing. The larger diameter has less friction pressure loss. The numbers I gave you above were based on 15 GPM, that will allow two showers, a washing machine and one other faucet to run and have a little leftover. I would check the static pressure at the source and see what you have to work with. Connecting to your sisters line after the main may create usage issues as well if her line is not correctly sized to run two households. Also keep in mind you will have some loss due to the hill. That can be figured out as well, you just need to know the elevation change.

why tap her line instead of tap the city main?
the way you propose is gonna be a lot of problems, probably for both of you.
no pressure, if both houses are using showers and maybe a dishwasher running I doubt you will like the flow.
like others have said, you probably need 1.5 or 2" for a run that long, drop to 3/4 for the feed to the house and 1/2" at faucets/valves etc. and you can get some pressure back.

This is just an assumption here, but I assume you are just not wanting to get another water meter, I know those boogers are costly- But over the long run I bet you may run into less problems if you get you own and not have to tap into hers-
