Interesting study done in Florida. Basically says bed fishing has little effect on bass populations.

I agree. It has to. If you take a bass from the bed, it doesn't reproduce. If it already has, the fry are unprotected and eaten.

I think the gest of the article is, one anglers ability to bed fish isn’t going to measurably effect bass populations. My point would be that “they” ain’t measuring good enough.
cheers

I trust the biologists more than I do other anglers.

if released they return, but will be much more harder to upset next time.

I agree no affect. What does affect them is knocking their sides off for the skillet. If it did affect a lake, Rayburn and fork would suck. So many many fish get plucked off beds and 99% of them aren't from sight fishing. Anyone beating the banks in less than 7ft if water is catching a bunch of bed fish.

It is impossible to NOT have an effect. Maybe not measurable, but it positively has to have some form of effect. Planned bed fishing, unplanned, inadvertent, whatever....it has some form of impact.

That said, if I see one, I’m trying. roflmao

anything written by FWC is a joke. I live in Florida and watch what the FWC does to the water here. Spraying herbicide on spawning flat DURING the spawn DOES kill the bass population. Not to mention the 8-10 hours per day 300+ days a year of chemical spraying in the lakes. FWC IS A JOKE!!!!!!!

I don’t fish the spawn because I just don’t like to interrupt the natural process that’s occurring- doesn’t seem right to me. If you disagree, that’s ok. We can disagree and still be friends. MAGA

I'll hold my judgement of that study until I can read the actual publication; I couldn't find the published journal article. Press releases usually don't tell the whole story and can be misleading. Experiments usually must have a limited scope and a very specific question so that statistical analysis can find differences if they exist (if you factor in every variable that could possibly be at play with bass spawning, you would have a very difficult time teasing out which variable was the strongest player because they often don't impact the issue independent of other variables). They even said there is an impact on the number of times a bass would spawn under heavy fishing pressure in a 1 acre pond if the bass is removed for 60 minutes and returned to the pond, even though they didn't detect a difference in fry production. That statement can only be assumed true for that very specific situation. More limits to detecting statistical differences is sample size/replication, of which there is no mention of in the press release.

From my understanding of the literature, heavy fishing pressure (including during the spawn) in less productive systems has a higher impact on the fish population than heavy fishing pressure in productive systems. The level of impact varies with each system, but I still think in our big productive reservoirs, heavy fishing during the spawn doesn't have the dramatic impact on the population some think it does otherwise Rayburn would be a wasteland. It doesn't take many successful spawning pairs of fish to supply enough fry to maintain a cove's bass population. It makes sense to think more is always better, but there's only so many resources to support those fry so there is a point where adding more fry over the carrying capacity of the area only results in higher mortality of the year class and slower growth of the survivors. Fisheries are complicated, and the study mentioned here is only touching on a very small component of a really big churning mass of inter-related variables that are unique to each lake and literally change continuously. I'm not downplaying the Florida F&W here, they do great work, I'm just saying that these claims as with others need to be kept in perspective.

since I do ALL catch and release I don't think pulling her off the bed for a minute or two makes any negative effect.

putting her in my live well and transporting her to a weigh-in miles and hours away and then releasing her miles away will have an effect on that fish.

And a big tournament during the spawn will have an effect. But how many bass are actually spawning at that moment is the question. With bass spawning starting in February and going thru until April, May and even some in June I don't think every bass in the lake is effected.

One bass may spawn half a million fry and that is why overall it does not really effect them.

I think if you catch a bass off a bed and release it immediately there is little to no effect. A livewell ride all day is probably not a good thing. Maybe it will try and re spawn? I don't know. I just don't think keeping fish that time of year for a weigh in is a good thing. But in reality a lot of fish are taken for live well rides and the fishing seems to stay pretty good on a lot of lakes. Maybe it could be better?

If caught and released in the same location, then I don't think there is much of an effect. Caught and released miles away there has to me a negative effect.

Having said that their are 2 tagging studies that I know of where lunker size bass released in one spot have consistently been caught again back in the area where they were originally caught.
