How do I know if a cut off to much of my fly line........? I’m a newbie and I’m wondering if I cut off to much. I am also looking for some lessons. I want to fish for trout in the future so I want to be able to lay the line down on the water softly. Thanks in advance

Look up the Red River Fly Fishing Club, they are hosting a clinic this Friday and Saturday at Lake Texoma with a lot of different information booths and demos. Only cost is the park admission fee.

Since you live in Fort Worth, you should check out the Fort Worth Flyfishers. They offer monthly Quick Classes on specific subjects and every 3 months they offer Flyfishing 101, in which you can go to a flyfishing outing and learn a lot about flyfishing from experienced flyfishers.

Not sure why you are cutting your fly line, but bring your equipment up to Eisenhower state park Saturday morning and we can take a look at it. I don't have any formal casting classes planned, but I'm sure one of us can spend some time with you during the Red River Rendezvous.

As a side note, I noticed last Saturday that Orvis has some of their fly lines on sale for $19 and $29. Looked like a good deal to me.

A lot of lines now have welded loops, at least on the leader end. Did you cut it on that end or the end where the line meets the backing? Cutting off line at the backing side doesn’t make a difference at all, except maybe if you want to cast 90 feet or more. If the line is a double taper, I guess you could mess it up on the back side by cutting several feet off.

On the front side, there’s usually a foot or two of front taper on WF lines before you get into the head. Some people as a matter of course remove the welded loop and do their own connection for the leader to fly line, not trusting the factory welded loops. I’ve never had a welded loop or any part of a fly line fail on a fish, but I’ve read it happens. Nail knots and other connections have failed too. Hooks open up on fish, yes, that’s happened to me. Tippets busted on fish, another affirmative.

Cutting into and removing the head is going to effect how a line casts since it’s the weight of that head that loads the rod to cast the line. The fly just basically goes along for the ride to wherever you send the line. Less head, less weight, less load, less chance to get a good cast.

Here is a video that details Fly Line to Leader connections that we used over the years. Of the ones shown, we use a Nail Knot Variant which only requires "snipping the fly line" once. The other methods shown which is also includes the classic Nail Knot connection are other options. Short answer to your question, "Don't cut your fly line... Please!" Hope this helps!

Thank you, I just saw it on you tube while searching for the topic I posted on. I am going to need to get a new fly line, I cut way to much off. The simple fact is I wasn't thinking about the tapper until it was to late. I was treating it like any other fishing line. Defiantly lessons learned. Thank you for all the help. I hope this reaches others so they don't make the same mistake I did.
