Thanks for sharing your illustration on how to recognize structure areas. This is where mapping all begins in knowing what to look for. In looking we are trying to determine if a pieces of structure will hold fish. I look at every contour line on all sides of that piece of structure to determine if the fish will use it on a consistent basis. Every piece of Structure is NOT created equal. The area from the piece of structure to deep water must be unique. Sometimes it is reversed if that piece of structure is a good distance from the Shoreline. If the shallows from that piece of structure to the shallows for feeding is excellent with lots of shoreline cover, gouges, protrusions, rocks, hardwoods and grass then the off shore structure will be the starting spot every day for those Bass to develop there patters of feeding in the shallows.
Those contour lines that produce the best and are attached to that structure of VERY irregular. Those contour lines lead the fish to that piece of structure from deep water. That deep water must be extremely close to the piece of structure. Huge Bass do not travel very far for their needs. How good that whole route is depends on the irregular features along that route like: rocks, wood, ledges and grass from the 20 ft. depth to the shallows.
I will say that some of our lakes are so lacking in Irregular Features that it may only take one to hit the mother load. This is why many fisherman spend hour upon hour working a piece of underwater structure and never catch a fish off of it. If you look at those Contour Lines around that piece of structure you will understand why it does not hold fish on a regular basis. I have caught a good stringer of fish off of a piece of structure to NEVER catch them again. After farther study of the contours those have been eliminated. Contours that are Irregular are excellent in every lake. FISH are FISH and they will be on the best contours in every lake. This is exactly how I have found Big Bass for over 50 years on every lake that I have fished.
