I want to fish Texoma for striper. What are chances of catching fish over 20 pounds? I have knowledge, gear and boat. Thanks

Slim to none. , I’ve fished Texoma since the late 70’s. , I had to go to Connecticut to break 20. This one broke 30.

Good luck

Mo

I would think breaking 15 lbs would be a nice target.
I have been in a few guided tournaments and have not seen a 15 pound fish yet.

Fish Texoma weekly, in 20 plus years have never personally saw a 20 pounder. Go to Arkansas or east coast if you are wanting to catch big striper.

It’s rare but in the 304 trips I fished during 2019 i saw 2-3 over 20# all released but only 2 were actually weighed because it was cold and I felt we could take the time.Other one was in July and it had to get back in the water ASAP
Here is the 2...one is a 20 and one is a 25 [Linked Image]

They are very rare. I have spent 26 years learning their behaviors and the stars align when you get one of these beasts I will never forget just a few years ago though I had a day where we had five fish 20 to 26 pounds in the boat and it was just absolutely unreal and one year later with the same guys couldn’t catch one over 6 pounds :-)

We used to catch them that size behind the damn at Texoma when they were letting the water out using surf rods and large pencil poppers filled with lead so we could chunk them far.

This was back in 1980 to around 1983, there was a Ron Speed Guide Service and I think they were running airboats behind the damn, They used to catch them pretty good as well.

It was mass chaos but good times once you got a big one on

Yep. Still to this day your odds of a really big striper will always be below the lake in the river directly behind the dam. True for Texoma, Canyon, Whitney, PK.....

Thanks for the response. I continue to fish Elephant Butte in NM. Not many stripers left. Our former Govenor Bill Richardson gave most of the water to Texas and Mexico. It killed most of the snipers.

I've heard stories of roving gangs of 40 lb stripers in Elephant Butte back in it's heyday.

Were you fishing it when it was Hot ? What is the fishing like now ?

thanks

Mo

My Grandson was about 14 years old a couple of years ago when he caught a 20lb Striper on Texoma. The replica is hanging on his bedroom wall. I'm 52 years older and have never done that, but I'm still trying.

Lake Hamilton Ark or lake Ouchita Ark. both lakes are @ Hot Springs . Hot Springs is historical and has lots of excellent micro breweries for you to peruse. Twenty plus pounders are common from December thru March with a few being taken early April.
