Howdy, I just joined the forum but have been following this thread for the last few years during my time at A&M. I've fished newmans bottom and nails creek plenty of times for white bass and crappie but am planning to try the spillway this weekend for some possible hybrids which is new territory for me. I planned to throw a clouser but wasn't sure if a sink leader was needed or not. I also planned on bringing my conventional gear to throw some deep divers and the typical white bass tackle (maybe some minnows). Any advice is appreciated. Thanks and Gig 'em

Not much happening at the spillway with no new water, besides J-Moe has educated all the fish in that old hole.. wink .

Howdy NicoA,

There is no need for sink tip lines or deep divers. The maximum depth right now is only about 5 feet. There haven't been many fish caught below the dam in the last two weeks. Most people, including myself have given up on trying. I saw lots of hybrids taken out of there and there aren't anymore coming in from the lake with the gates closed.

In April and May the shad will be spawning on the banks of the main lake. Early morning and late evening there will be trillions of shad on the banks and the white bass and hybrids will be feeding on them. You can usually wade out and catch a few hybrids. You can see them coming, busting the surface with great violence!!

Gig'em, Class of '87

welcome

Any of this rain making it down that way. Been raining here in Killeen for the past two days. Not heavy but pretty steady with some better showers mixed in.

Getting a few light showers but not enough to get the creeks moving.

Ran up Yegua yesterday morning. Ran all the way up to Newman's near the low water crossing on the trail. That's about as far as you can get with the water levels right now. The lake is just under pool. The creek was a little off color with a slight flow. Rain in the forecast this week. If you're looking to get up into the creek and don't want to walk, hit me up. I'll be running trips on the weekends as soon as duck season is over.

J-Moe, glad to see you caught a few as far up as Irwin. Hopefully we get some good rain tomorrow to push a few more fish into the creek.

I took a rod with me, I had been out duck hunting. I tossed around a jig a little bit with not bites. I have my boat stripped down for duck season, no transducer, not trolling motor, or trolling batteries. I'll get it all put back on next week and get ready to start fishing more.
