I am going to Squaw Creek for the first time this weekend. Can you run the lake except close to shore? Also i saw a video on Youtube that if you catch a Tilapia you cannot release it back. Is this the case?

If you go left from the ramp, it’s clear as long as you go way wide of the points. To the right, you really need to know where your going. Lots of stuff to tear up a boat with going that way.

PS. If you see a white red and black Skeeter fishing a point...please don’t go between the boat and the point....running over the fish. Thanks in advance.

Crime, no. Broken a TPWD Rule that could get you fined, YES; unless you gutted it before throwing it back!

This is not to start some big debate, but do Tilapia really mess stuff up enough to have a rule to kill them..? I've only caught one (not at squaw) and they are beautiful fish! Fun fight too.

Two baits catch Tilapia regularly: night crawlers and cast nets! You can load a boat with either one of these. That said while bass fishing I catch one or two at least every other trip to Squaw. Square bill and they will also suck in a Yellow Magic when thrown where they are feeding heavy. I never take the trouble to murder them for no other reason than I believe that my taking the trouble to kill one would only mean that instead of there being 10 million of them in the lake there would be 9,999,999 of them! Nothing fishermen will do will impact their numbers. I actually catch drum on bass lures out there more than tilapia. They are supposed to be killed because they are considered an invasive species. Absolutely amazing how many of their beds you can see on your depth finder.

Yup, mine was caught on a sexy shad squarebill.. It was my first one but from others I've seen that one I hung up on was definitely on the bigger side.. it was a real good size one, great fight too. I know they invasive but was wondering what they really do hurt...

I'm pretty much the same. If I'm not going to eat it I have no reason to kill a fish or animal.

I was told the spawn every 28 days so yes they will take over a lake.. Looked at this website and it says they can spawn every 17 days... No wonder they take over a lake

In a warm water lake they are asian carp light. I know people that do the same thing to hybrid striper on lakes they've recently been introduced, the tournament fishermen hate them because they out compete the largemouth for food.

My understanding is they changed it from must kill to not allowed to have them in possession without gutting or removing head. I have never heard of anyone being ticketed for releasing a Tilapia. I have not asked the game warden but thought they were letting people wait until they got back to the docks to gut them for those who are cleaning them. It would be crazy to have to gut them as you cast netted them.

https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/...-and-transport-of-exotic-aquatic-species

I had never seen the tournament exemption written to not drain live wells for trailering to weighin that is also on that page.

Huge difference is Hybrids are sterile. Simply a “put and take” fishery by TPWD. If you want to get rid of them simply stop stocking them and pull up a chair and wait.
