I have $150 in Bass Pro Shoos gift cards and would like to spend it on a 7/8 or 9/10 fly reel to use in saltwater. I see several options in this price range from White River, Sage, Landon and Redington.

Any feedback on the reels available at BPS are greatly appreciated.

Make sure you get a machined reel. Cast reels don’t do well in salt water. They will begin to oxidize beneath the powder coat, no matter how diligent you are about rinsing and cleaning. I’ve heard that the Redington Behemoth is an exception, but I have no personal experience with that particular reel.

I second the get machined Al. From their website, the TFO BVK looks like the lowest cost machined Al, anodized reel. It’s a little over $150.

Go with a SAGE , it's sealed to protect from salt water .

The Orvis Hydros SL is on sale for $189 at Cabelas/Basspro. Pretty good saltwater reel in that price range.

All good choices. I have several Hydros SLs; they are a lot of reel for the money.

Piscifun Sword on Amazon is machined aluminum. Probably $60-70 for the size your looking at.

Those are discontinued from Orvis now and i checked both BP and Cabelas and both up to $239 now unless certain stores have them discontinued sell out .

Although the OP wants to use his BPS credit, the Hydros SLs are on sale at the Orvis stores, for anyone else looking. So are the Recons.

I'm sad about the hydros. I like my hydros.

My baseless conspiracy theory: It was as good as the mirage for half the price, so they pulled it to improve mirage sales.

I don’t have inside info any more, but generally when Orvis clears out an item they’re about to introduce a new version. The only criticism I’ve heard of the SL was the drag knob. Just a guess, but perhaps they’re about to debut version # 2 of the SL, with an ‘improved’ drag knob?

We’ve diverted this thread from the OP’s intended direction. Let’s let it go back there......
