I read an article from Massad Ayoob where he suggested having the first 1 or 2 rounds in the shot gun be something similar to a dove load . His theory was it would give you a higher likely hood of a hit that would unsettle the bad guy and screw up their deadly intentions as well as make them retreat and then you would get down and dirty with the 2 shot being a heavier load . Hopefully our families are never in need of that kind of protection .

To the OP - as stated definitely get gun with a stock. Also, there's nothing wrong with a 20 gage. Especially if there is any possibility your wife will be handling the gun. You really don't lose much in the way of shot spread or overall effectiveness.

I know pumps are the traditional choice, but I chose an auto loader. They are reliable and require next to no coordination or thinking...and the racking of pump scaring off an intruder is an urban legend. Generally it tells the intruder where you are and what kind of gun you have. Lot of opinions out there and this is mine. My dream gun would be a Benelli M4. mine don't need to be racked, you might hear the safety click off, maybe. Who needs jams? https://www.chuckhawks.com/god_create_autoloading_shotguns.htm

Just curious. Why a shotgun and not a handgun? easier to hit with a shotgun and don't have to worry where the bullet winds up if you miss.

One thing to think about if you keep a loaded, unlocked gun in your house or apartment.
If you get burgled while you are away and come home while the guy is still there and he has your loaded gun,
a previous un armed guy is now armed and if cornered he may try to shoot his way out. Just My thoughts.
Sometimes what didn't work out for you, did in fact, work out for you.

I've had a Mossberg 500 with pistol grip and shorty barrel for close to 30 years. Been a great ultra-reliable shotgun. Don't think you can beat it for self defense with .00 buck.

Even a youth pump shotgun in 20 gauge is effective. Relatively short barrel. Easy to manipulate and low cost.
Combat shotguns are better but it just depends on how much you want to spend. You can make the intruder more dead.

You can make the intruder more dead. Can you stop them from voting?

Saiga 12 with a 20 round drum gives you enough brush to paint the entire room.....and hallway.

My home defense is the Remington Marine Magnum 12 gauge. I use the Home Defense Loads By Hornady and I believe Remington ..It does wonders on hogs. Doesn’t really kick either. Fun gun to shoot
