This is exactly why I have always attempted to tie my knot opposite of the “open part of the split ring”. Doesn’t always end up or stay that way. Also one of the reasons I prefer the oval shaped split rings. Never have to worry about keeping the knot off the “split ring opening” and I feel their action is equal. [Linked Image]

I've gone to using snap clips, mostly for quick change outs but it would also solve this concern.

That's pretty large.

How big a crankbait are you throwing?

Split rings IMO allow the best action unless removed and a loop knot used. Uni-knot used making sure it goes around both wires of the split ring.
Fluorocarbon is pretty resistant to abrasion so that's the leader I would use if needed. Never use mono.

I used to use them, but no longer do. I found a VERY few that the split ring impaired the line and cut it, but that is fishing a LOT of CBs. When we did the test of 500 CBs we had a few problems, but not many. I tie direct to the CB any more andproblem solved. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

The bigger the better in my opinion.

Do you put a snap on every bait and tie / re-tie to the snap, or do you tie on a snap to main line when you are cranking and snap to the bait?

Do you not trust split rings? If not, why?

I tie a snap to my line then attach the snap to the split ring. I have no problems at all with that set up. Your knot is tied to the base of the snap or clip so nothing to damage it. I leave the split ring on the bait because it makes it easier to put the snap or clip through it. Some of the eyelets on some crank baits are very small. A Yellow Magic with no split ring can be difficult because of the cup in the mouth of the bait and the eyelet being recessed. I have never had a failure at all using a speed clip

I mostly use the snap clip because it works well and I can change baits easily, and like I said, I have never had one fail so I don't see any advantage of not using one.

I use Spro and Norman brand of clips.

Glad you liked my comment. I have been using these clips on baits for many years now and haven't had one fail on me. I even use on for my Alabama rig tied to 65 # test braid.

I've never had a problem on any split ring from any lure manufacturer. I pay attention to the knot itself, its location on the split as described above. Make sure it's a clean tight knot. Sometimes they slip into the split area and into the ring which can certainly cause a weak spot on 12lb test.

Haven't had issues either. In fact, I purchased several crankbaits from somebody and had to add split rings to most of them. Circle split rings for the hooks, oval for the line tie.
