Great video Ken. Deadly serious matter. 50 degree water doesn't seem dangerous to a lot of us. Amazing to hear expert swimmers usually can't make it more than a few hundred yards in that cold of water. I know a young man died on Fayette a number of years ago. He was out fishing by himself and couldn't get his motor started. He had on a life vest and decided to swim toward shore in 50 degree water. They found him later floating but dead.

Great post Ken.
There are a couple members on here that got in the water at Fork to lift a Mercury outboard back into the boat that had been knocked off like the one in your video. He hit a stump and it came off the boat with nothing but the steering cables letting the motor dangle below the transom. They got it to the ramp and five guys got into 60 degree water to lift it up onto the back deck.
He said within 10 mins his muscles begun to size up to the point he could barely use his arms.
Hypothermia is a killer. Please wear your life jackets ESPECIALLY if you are fishing by yourself.

I suffered a serious issue with Hypothermia one time about 30 years ago . It was scary . My body went from cold , to shivering , to incredible headache/neck ache then loss of muscle function . My arms and legs basically became useless , I couldn't control how to use them and I had almost ZERO muscle strength in them. In hindsight , I think the amount of time it takes to get hypothermic is different for all people and circumstances , but it is no joke . The weirdest part of this fishing day was the guy I went with turned out to be an ex- con and went to prison for murder and I had no idea. I didn't go on other guys boats for over 20 years after .

I've fallen in a couple of times over 45 years of fishing. Only once in cold water. Lake Fork in January with air temps in the 40's and water probably in the high 40's. Full insulated bibs and boots. I went from 175 lbs to probably 350 lbs in a matter of seconds. What Ken says about your boots is a GREAT idea! If my nephew had not been there I have serious doubts I would have survived. I came up immediately, grabbed the gunnel and my nephew tried to pull me in. No way. My strength left me in just a few minutes as I pulled myself around the gunnel back to the motor. Climbed on and used the trim, but even then it was all I could do to slide on the back deck even with my nephew helping. It's no joke. Thanks Ken!

Good video Ken. Makes it a little nervous climbing in someone else's boat as a co angler when so much is at stake. I bought an epirb after the okeechobee accident.

Certainly not to jump Ken's thread, but another real good and cheap survival item is a florescent orange traffic safety flag. Buy one and put 2 safety pins on it. If you are ever stranded, pin it to your flipping stick, and wave it. It will get you seen. It's so much better than waving your ball cap or hands, and signals that you are in trouble. Only had to use it once, but some duck hunters said I just looked like someone fishing out on the Veach flats until I started waving that orange flag. Otherwise, I was looking at a trip to Caney on the trolling motor - if it lasted that far. They are at Home Depot on the isle by the rope, straps and safety glasses. Roll it up and put it in the tackle storage box.
Adding a whistle to the lanyard of your kill switch is also a great idea. And, it will get you out of a ticket if your horn doesn't work when the local justice wants to check.
Great video Ken - Hope none of us ever need it.
