Ok, I have a question about anchor trolleys. Do you have to have an anchor cleat when using an anchor trolley? I was just thinking about a carabiner clipped on to my kayak handle. Rather not drill unnecessary holes in to my Diablo Amigo.

I run the anchor line through the loop on my anchor trolley then caribiner it to an eyelet that was already on my kayak.
Makes it easy to disconnect in a hurry if I need to.

I’ve had two different boats with two different anchor trolleys, neither one needed a cleat. Neither one ever slipped at all.

Mine came with a cleat however if you need to use the cleat to keep it from slipping, its probably too windy or there is too much current to be safely anchored. If that makes sense.

You dont want to be anchored up so tightly that a big swell can cause the yak to get pulled below the water line. If you need the cleat to prevent slippage its likely not a good time to be on anchor.

My 'cleat' is there for insurance. It sets quick and releases quicker. It's also out of the way so line/rods do not get hung in it like conventional cleats on the deck. As Dan mentioned if you are in water with chop you definitely want some play.

I installed a cleat on the 1st kayak I had because it came with the anchor trolley kit and never used it. I've installed anchor trolley's on 5 other kayaks we've had or have and have not installed an anchor cleat nor do I ever need one. Not at all necessary IMO.
