While fishing on Lake Whitney I saw a yellowish fish swimming below the surface. I thought it was a tilapia, so I ran back to the van to retrieve my bow. The fish had moved a long way down the bank and was much further out in the water, but I tried a shot. It was one of the best bow shots I have made, especially on a fish under 10" lol. The fish was so far away that the arrow did not penetrate, but it broke the dorsal fin and the line got hung on a spine, so I was able to reel it in. I have heard reports of tilapia in Lake Whitney, but this was my first and it is a unique specimen. Several of its characteristics do not match the blue tilapia normally identified in Texas. It was very yellow, with yellow tipped fins, and had a bright red-orange breast. I took the fish to the Biodiversity Center at the University of Texas at Austin to try and get it identified to species. Has anyone else caught a tilapia at Lake Whitney?

I a surprised to hear about Tilapia in Whitney. The do not tolerate colder water and will start to die off during the winter. Good find and likely a lake record.

do you eat them,.. I did not eat these, but I catch them at Squaw Creek often and they are very good to eat. The meat is white and not fishy tasting.

It should be a record, if we can figure out what it is lol. Send it as a regular Tilapia and Ron will change it to "Other Hybrid Tilapia" and give you the record.

Washed in from Squaw Creek. Those were my thoughts as well. Speaking of talapia, that's what I had for lunch today. Pan seared.

I would love to catch tilapia! Never have, I might have to make my way to Lake Whitney or Squaw Creek! Go to Fayette County, take your boat and cast net to the discharge. They are always there during the Winter. You will probably have company.
