Take heed or not. Returned from visiting a friend in the hospital. We tie together on occasion. He has been over exposed to UV light. Eyes swollen shut and one hand red as can be. Doc said blindness and skin issues are a possibility but won't know until swelling goes down and testing can be done.

That is pretty scary. Hopefully your friend makes a full recovery. Tim Flagler just put out a video talking about being sensitive to resins and some things he does to minimize exposure. Sounds like he suffers from the same symptoms your friend does although he thinks his are due to exposure to the UV resin, not the light. Although he doesn't say if that is his opinion or the opinion of his doctor.

I've watched a few of his videos, nice to put a face with the voice. Looks the same as my friends reaction. When the doc said the UV I associated it with welder flash burn which I have experienced. The resin never touched his hand or face though. Maybe fumes. Hopefully know more next week.

UPDATE I was visiting my buddy this week and though he looks like he went a few rounds with Tyson says he is progressing. Skin has started to rejuvenate and not drying and cracking as much. His eyes still have the white dot covering most of his view meaning retina damage, so he still can't drive. Yep he zapped himself. At our age we sometimes employ a magnifying visor and I think that may have contributed. Nov and Dec we tied over 1200 hooks for presents to friends and family. It's hard to see him this way as our lives have paralleled in respect to epoxy resins chemicals welding, except the uv resins, which I don't use much. He was fond of the uv stuff. As I was leaving she who must be obeyed handed me a gallon ziplock more than half full of all the offending adhesives and lights he used, quite the inventory. Not trying to scare anyone, as I haven't had any effects yet, some people are more sensitive than others.

Interesting. I try not to look at the UV light and try not to expose my skin to the light. I’m doing bigger bass and saltwater type flies and just use a tiny amount of Loon thin UV to protect the final thread wraps on some saltwater patterns. I tie in my garage and sometimes I’ll walk out into the sun to cure the adhesive rather than use the UV flashlight. I’m also tying a tiny fraction of flies of what y’all are doing. But, I’ve had zero issues with the glue or lights.
Hope your friend continues to recover.

To clarify, the light he preferred was sold by Loon but I have seen them elsewhere, is built like a pen with 1 led light, he called it a laser. Mine is a CC Goo light built like a shower head with about 20 lights. My usage is similar to yours, I only use UV if I know a hatch is happening and I'm short of a pattern that requires a quick solution gloss head or thorax cover, I'll spin up a dozen or so pour coffee and head to the lake, other than that it's sally's and super glue.
He will survive. If 40+ yrs in that marriage didn't get him, this won't take him out.
