I just tie and use these balanced leeches. Balanced leeches have an extension in front of the hook eye. They got famous on western stillwaters like Pyramid lake for large cutthroat trout, but they work for crappie and other fish. I use tungsten beads for the weighting. Tungsten will sink a jig or fly a lot faster than than lead. Balanced leeches can be fished under a cork or not, but they hang horizontally while at rest, that’s the whole balanced part.

The tail is marabou, the body Arizona Simi Seal. There’s about fifty shades of that material and it has some flash built in.

How about these in #6. These sort of flies are also what I use on sandies in the rivers. If I am in a waterbody where black crappie are more prevalent a simple wooly bugger is what I toss usually in black or brown. Thanks for your post it reminded me I need to get some done #8 and #10.
