Hey TFF, second time posting! First time was a big success (thanks again for all the help), but now that winter is coming around I'm at a complete loss for what type of fish to look for. I know the TPWD is stocking rainbow trout in various locations this time of the year, and would love some tips on how to go about catching trout. I've never used punch bait before, and have little experience with artificial baits (lures, spinners, jigs, etc.) so any advice regarding this is appreciated.

As for winter fishing, just overall advice is helpful too. What kinda fish do y'all look for during the winter? Best places to bank fish in Dallas/Lavon areas?

Thanks again everyone, and hope y'all have a wonderful Christmas!

For trout just use a small hook and powerbait trout bait. Just roll the trout bait in a small ball and cover the hook with it. Put a split shot about 12 to 18 inches above the hook. The powerbait floats so it will hold the bait off the bottom. Try different colors. I have had results with white, chartreuse, orange, and rainbow. Fish a spot for 15 to 30 minutes then move if you don’t get a bite. I also like to throw out an earthworm for trout or to see if other species are around.

Winter is the best time of year for big blue catfish. Stripper and white ads are also good in the winter. Rough fish like carp and buffalo really respond well to chumming at this time of year. Just search the forum for a species you are interested in. And welcome

Thanks! I'll be sure to try the powerbait in different colors. I've never fished for buffalo or carp before, so that'd definitely be a fun time for learning.

Thanks again, will be sure to try out the advice! smile

I thought you meant speckled trout and was about to tell you to get a corky and stalk some bays and back-barriers. Ha! Don’t waste time on hatchery trout. Winter is a great time to fish for plenty of native fish here in Tejas. Bass and sunfish are still active and so are drum, carp, and buffalo. I managed to land a smallmouth buffalo on fly yesterday. My first!

If the pond will allow you, use whole kernel corn on a tiny hook. The trout are raised on a corn-basd feed so corn is what they know.

Yellow power bait and Gold Super Duper Lures work best for me. Also the day after the stocking is the best. Fish seem to settle down. Use light tackle. Trout are a blast to catch and also very good eating. thumb

I use a #8 (egg hook) there small. And power bait slip sinker and about 16in leader. make the ball just large enough to float the hook orange power has has alway been the best one for me. small spinners and maggots on a cork I grew up in Washington State the main fish there is trout. Honestly I won't even waist my time on Texas stock trout there really small

Agree with above advice. would suggest using smallest split shot you can find, put only enough on so you can cast and if need more than one to space them apart by about 4 inches.
When trout takes the bait they just pick up a little bit of weight at a time.
A very sensitive poll and keeping an eye on the line for the slightest movement also helps a lot.

thats with the slip sinker is for. I grew on a lake in Washington slip siker is they way to go keep a little slack in the line allow the trout to swallow that small hook with no resistance but agin. mall mephs gold or silver blades are the best. a wedding rings or a bobbers. work very well when tipped with maggots. in fact nothing is going to work better then maggots
