For those of you who are interested, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Records and Awards page was rounding all the records to whole numbers. This created multiple issues on the page. The rounding error has been corrected and it appears things are back to normal.

Good news. I plan to be on that list next year. If you want some “how to” information on fishing records you could get my book, “The Art of Fishing for Records”. It has lots of stories and techniques on how to get your name in the fishing record books. It contains a great deal of information about the Texas record program including the Texas Elite Angler Program as well as information on world records and alternative fishing methods that could result in records.

Lol, I had the lake record smallmouth on Granbury for a year or so until I got beat by a bait fisherman, that record still stands since 1993. Made me think less about records.....

I know a great deal about getting records replaced lol. It happens to me all the time. I have even helped other anglers break my records. Many anglers are not interested at all in catching records because of the work involved in documentation and the competition between fishing methods. Those are legitimate concerns, but for me the potential of catching a record while I am fishing adds a great deal of fun to the event. Oh and it is nice to be able to say things like, I hold the IGFA All-tackle World Record for a gulf toadfish.

True, just didn't sit right getting beat by live bait, LOL But I crappie fish with live bait sometimes and if I caught a record bass I would probably enter it....

There’s some low hanging fruit on records out in the saltwater if anyone fly fishes. Any gafftop on the fly is an automatic state record. Same for Atlantic cutlassfish and stingrays. The croaker record is very reachable and so is kingfish, Gulf a.k.a whiting. There’s other potential odd ball catchable fish not listed in the Texas records.

Osborn, thanks for the offer, I will order the book today. As Karstopo stated there is some low hanging fruit available in this area as well. When we earlier discussed record rules, I have contacted TPWD a few times and got mixed responses. So I have to assume they tried to copy IGFA rules which qualifies "type" of fly "which includes streamer, bucktail, tube fly, wet fly, dry fly, nymph, popper and bug", basically a recognized pattern Don't know why TPWD would leave that part out. So I'm good to go now, I don't tie cartoon flies. I'm not a record hound but if it's fun and available why not.

The fish don’t care if the fly has a name or is featured in a book. I think the fish just want to know that it might be something on the menu and not likely to hurt them. One thing that’s good in fly fishing is that flies are not patentable. Everyone that’s ever tied anything has been inspired by the materials, forage and other previous patterns. Maybe it’s a faithful copy of a famous pattern or maybe it’s some little novel twist on something well known, but what a royal mess it would be if people tried to protect “their” flies with patents.

It has amazed me how much low hanging fishing record fruit is still out there. I have concentrated on official state records and world records, instead of waterbody records, but an angler could get a waterbody record in many situations if they understand the rules.
MJM - I hope you enjoy the book and let me know if it helps you catch a record. As far as the "recognized type of artificial fly" requirement, I believe the idea is to eliminate small jigs, spoons, and soft plastics. If it is material tied on a hook, it will probably be ok. Before I started trying for records, I used to make a trout fly with a piece of power bait worm tied on the hook. It worked great, but because it is scented it will eliminate the chance at a record under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Rules. The biggest issue for me is that the weight of the line must carry the fly rather than the weight of the fly carrying the line. This is a big issue offshore fly fishing and one reason I moved to an 11/12 weight fly fishing rig to utilize larger fly patterns.

I have the state record for river carpsucker. I had it for while and then lost it. Went back to my go to spot and caught one that will hopefully put it out of reach by just over a pound.

Thanks for the heads up. I created a spreadsheet for this upcoming year and was wondering why everything was rounded. Updated it after I read this post. Going after some fly fishing water body records this year!
