Has anyone ever seen an otter near Pier 121? I had seven crappie in a basket with no holes 20ft deep, came back the next morning all but one were gone. Found two heads on the pier. Any ideas? Nobody would steal them and clean them there, at least I don't think they would. I'm thinking an otter.

That sound like a otter. They normally eat the heads first but maybe it wash full.

I had 7 crappie that otters got out of a fish basket on my boathouse. They ate all they could and punched holes in the heads of 3 other crappie and left them on the boathouse floor.

From then on I just put fish directly on ice and leave them in the garage over night until I'm ready to clean them.

I suggest you put a motion camera (trail/hunting camera) out and set to record short videos. would be fun to confirm your suspicion.....

Is it possible to wire it shut ? I don't deal with otters or know if they can defeat that.

I saw a racoon pull a basket rope up 12 feet deep, pull all the fish out and throw the basket back in the water. A neighbor had the same thing happen, to this Day I think he was sure I stole his fish. LOL

I had the same thing happen. One time he left the basket pulled up on top of the styrofoam under the dock.
The second time after t attempted to wire the lid shut he destroyed it but did put it back in the water.

My solution was to tie a piece of 2” pvc sticking 5’ out into the slip and hang the basket off the end. Apparently he couldn’t keep enough traction while hanging on to that pvc to still be able to pull the rope up and get the fish out.
