I was told that a long time ago. Not something I've ever tracked. As my boats on a lift at a marina, I'm getting ethanol free gas regardless.

Nope. They do change the formulation to a "summer blend" for the Chicago area to meet air emission requirements. There could be some other areas of the country that they do that as well. But ethanol is the main ingredient the EPA requires for air emissions to meet the federal standards. It can get complicated what and when certain gasoline blends have to be supplied to specific areas.

This never ceases to amaze me. Some one will go buy a $50,000 -$80,000 rig and never read the Owner's manual.

I can assure that Yamaha knows what is the proper fuel to run, much better than your brother in law who knows a guy that works on motors or some yahoo that posts on the internet.

Find the Owner's manual, read it, follow it.

If the book says 87, then run 87. If it says 103 aviation fuel, then find some and run that.

QuikTrip usually carries ethanol free 90 octane. I use it in saws, etc. Murphy has ethanol free 87

2012 VF250 manual
Don’t see anything about going too high on octane, just too low.

They changed the manual. They now recommend mid-grade for North America beginning around 2015 model years from what I can tell. It does still has the note about minimum pump octane and a modified (slightly) statement about ethanol content due to the changes with e15 & e85

Are these octane ratings calculated as RON, MON or PON?

The higher the octane the slower the fuel burns. You would have to compare to actually know if there is a gain with anything over 87. Usually mpg and power go hand in hand.
