1997 mercury 150 efi with a hairline crack through one of the magnets. My mechanic said it can’t be repaired and we have to get another flywheel. Another guy I talked to today said he repairs them all the time. Do any of you know the real answer? I’m without a boat so I ordered a used flywheel off of eBay that won’t arrive until after New Years. If it’s repairable I could do that this week and have a boat to use until the new one arrives.

1977 models are simple motors, if the guy who said he can fix it is reputable then go for it

You don't want the magnets breaking apart and flying around inside the motor!!!! Trust me...

Don't risk it.

Lol the answers just as decisive as your two mechanics!

I don’t know anything about magnets and thought it was interesting to get complete opposite answers. I’ll play it safe and wait on the used flywheel but it sure does stink to need a boat and not have one. 😁.

If the mechanic is going to replace the cracked magnet then go with that, otherwise replace the flywheel.
