Some are saying 89 for best performance but wouldn’t 93 be better? Since it’s the highest octane?

Running higher octane than the motor is built for doesn't help at all. Run what is recommended

The owner's manual says to use 89. I trust Yamaha and my dealer to know what is best for my motor. Not gonna experiment with a $20,000 motor.

Yamaha suggests nothing under 89 octane.

When they made this decision they sent their field technicians to a 2 day Texaco clinic on gasoline additives and ingredients. After completing the 2 day segment, many of those field technicians would not run anything other than 89 octane in their personal vehicles after the training. They indicated that 87 octane fuels were basically junk in a tank.

I read minimum 89 but when I go to fork 87 is the best I can find ethanol free. You’d think the place that holds the biggest skeeter event would have proper gas for them to run on. I also add ring free and ethanol treatment to every tank.

See, the manual doesn't say avoid Ethenol, in fact it says just the opposite, ethanol (no more than 10%) is fine. Now, we all know that is the corn lobby, but octane first, then deal with the ethanol second! Hell, If you run the gas through as much as I do mine, it really doesn't sit long enough to have any ethanol problems.

I would trust what Mr. Pierce says above as well.

Detonation is term associated to octane ratings. If the engine is experiencing knock conditions the computer will retard spark timing thus reduce power and ultimately top end speed.

Three pages of opinions? It’s not really needed to debate the science of gas. Put in the tank what the manufacturer put in the owners manual. Simple. Less is an issue with the motor, more is an issue with your wallet and motor.

During the winter, does the gas still have ethanol? I thought they only put in ethanol during the summer.

Yes, the winter/summer blends have really nothing to do with ethanol content.
